Default Transmission mount shims

I did a search and found a thread where Bob indicated exactly what is stated in the manual - shim the transmission mount so that the center of the output shaft is 3.5" above the chassis cross member.

To accomplish that, I've added two additional 1/8" shims to each side (the ERA supplied mount included two shims - one for each side of the mount). So, I've achieved the 3.5" by adding 1/4" more and there is still a small angle between the transmission and the driveshaft - which Bob stated is also preferable to having it in a straight line - to better distribute the load on the universal joints. My concern is that the carb plane is already slightly forward (about 1/8" measured at the mounting bolts - back to front. The car is still sitting nose high and I haven't adjusted the ride height yet. So, the carb will ultimately be sloping forward even more once the ride height is adjusted. If I just use the shims supplied with the kit, the carb slope will be less but the angle of the drive shaft gets more pronounced and I'm under the recommended 3.5".

What have you guys done in this regard? Bob, what are your thoughts?

Thanks,

Kevin

A little forward tilt is OK. Think of it this way: When you accelerate at 1/2G, the fuel in the bowl becomes tilted at roughly 30 degrees in the opposite direction. You're just partially "fixing" a naturally occurring dynamic phenomenon.

Kevin - I think my carbs are about 1 to 2 deg off level and I have the transmission tail set up on the high side. Different manifolds are set up slightly differently.

There are wedge carb adaptors available and original Cobras apparently were at least sometimes fitted with them by Shelby.
carb+wedge+plates - JEGS High Performance

I think the smallest wedge plate I found was 4 deg and that was too much correction for my set up and with a smooth hood I was concerned about hood clearance. So I'm doing without for starters.

I guess you need to level your car up front to rear with a jack and see how much off level your carb is going to end up and see if it's enough to go with a 4 deg wedge plate. I believe conventional wisdom is it's better to have a slight forward tilt of the carb so that under acceleration the carb will level out as the front end rises.

some of the factory manifolds have a 5 degree angle.

yours with an 1/8 inch variance is about 1 and 1/4 degree....your fine

Kevin - you said you found a thread on this subject. Here is one I started a couple years ago on the subject or carb angle. Not sure if it's the same one you found or not.

Motor installation angle in chassis?

So Bob, I'm fine with the extra shims? Just want to confirm that.

Fred, the tilt will be more pronounced than it is now once I level the car. The engine settled the front considerably but it is still sitting high.

Thanks,

Kevin

put the level on the valve cover rail for a reading of the motor.

the carb pad may be on an angle already

Kevin,

Yes, your current shim setup is fine.
