Thanks, that is exactly my feeling. I am a not concerned with any of the mechanical aspects of the car because I feel very compfortable with installation/fabrication of the parts. I am definitely not a body guy though so that is where I no I need to spend the money up front. The trick is going to be fitting it in my budget. I have 40k set aside for the kit and body work. If I can make the slab side/ fender flare car fall in that budget then it's off to the races, f not I will just go the standard FIA route. Either way I will be happy with the car.

just got off the phone with Peter, awesome guy to talk to. Looks like I am going slabside. Gonna send my deposit out today. Thanks everyone for their input, cant wait to be tearing up the roads in my dream car. Poor Peter is drowning in builds, I didn't even get to start talking before he stops me and says "before we begin, the wait is 12 months"...lol. Roger that.

Talked with Peter (ERA) and Ron (Metal Morphous) today. Awesome to talk to and I think are just as excited as I am to build a cobra. I am going to do the slabside and Metal Morphous is going to do the bodywork and paint. Looks like am I am finally going to make a long dream come true....early 289 comp car. Thanks everyone for the help/information.

That sounds great. I'm sure you will be more than pleased. The wait is long - but that helps save up the extra cash for all those options and extras that you will break down and order.  |

Some say that the longest wait is when your car leaves the factory and it's in transit to your garage.....but I can tell you that having the shipping details available and being able to track the exact location of the ship with your Cobra body aboard, all the way from Pennsylvania, down your east coast, through the Panama Canal.....across to Auckland and then to Sydney, Australia, before it's put on a truck for the trip up to the Gold Coast (Queensland, Australia).....that's a very long, very slow wait ....and that's before any work even begins on the chassis build and the body mods. Having to wait is a bummer but I have waited 15years to get to the point to be able to buy the one I want the way I want it so whats another year. I will absolutely track the progress. I think the next big decision is going to be color but I will cross that road when I come to it.

Start thinking about color now. You'll change your mind many times before it actually goes on and even a few times after its painted. It's actually one of the hardest choices to make.

Waiting 15 years isn't all that bad. I got a brochure from ERA in 1980 (still have it) and placed my order in 2009.  |

One of the key reasons for buying a Kirkham. There was no need to pick a color and saved me from days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, millenniums of vacillation.
Red, yellow and blue are beautiful Cobra colors. But then, let's say you pick blue, do you paint it Princess Blue, Viking Blue, Guardsman Blue, Bright Blue or...... |

Honestly nightwatch blue was my first choice and still is really but the more I think about it I don't know. Its definitely going to be a solid color, no metallic or anything like that. I can't go red because my Viper is red. It has to be a deep, rich color. A non-metallic green, I am even leaning towards pepper white.

Looking at the colour of the original cars is a good starting point, but in the end, it's your build, your colour choice. I have to say that choosing the colour of my 289FIA replica wasn't as straightforward as I initially thought it would be. If I can suggest....if you see a picture of a 289 that you like, print it and put it into a folder, and keep adding to the folder....and the eventual colour of choice might start to become more clear.

that's a good idea. I have been looking at colors of European cars of that era to find a color I like. I am leaning towards a dark color, I think it makes the details pop. I found some 60's Mercedes colors I like, greys, blues, greens. I got time though.

You made a very wise choice in selecting Metal-Morphous to do the recreation and body work. Ron and his crew are extremely talented. There may be some as good, but none better. You will be very pleased. And if you are fortunate enough, you may get to meet "The ever Lovely and Gracious" Renee.
Ron has done a number of jobs for me and here is a picture of the latest.
