I know I'm late to this
I've used this: https://aeromotiveinc.com/product/ph...h-fuel-system/ in my HSMobile. It works great and isn't too tall. It also has an engineered baffle which keeps fuel at the pump intake when cornering or otherwise inducing G-forces.
If removing the tank isn't too difficult, and there's a little clearance above it, this can be a really good solution.
A couple of photos:

I just saw this thread was resurrected and thought I'd share what I did for my conversion. I removed the tank and had a bung welded in the area suggested by Bob. I used the original fuel line as my return and ran the new supply line on the right side of the car. Here's a photo of how I configured the pump and filter. I gave up on the in-tank option because there is very little room on the top of the tank to run fuel lines. A custom tank would be necessary with a shorter profile to use a top mounted fuel pump.
I wouldn't put a surge tank in the wheel well. Too exposed to possible damage from the rear wheel if things got ugly.
Note: I had trouble uploading the photo for some reason. Not sure why, it's a jpeg and not too big. Maybe someone has an answer? Send me your email and Ill send you the photo.

Both Edelbrock and FiTech make a tank with a high pressure pump inside that looks easily mountable. Let me know what you end up doing as I will be in the same boat when I build mine.
