Roll bar removal
I was thinking about having my chrome roll bar powder coated black over the winter. So last night I took the panel behind the seats off to get at the bolts and I see that one of the bolts is right behind the trans tunnel and to get it out would require removing the tunnel and all that goes with that (seats, shifter, etc.) and I'm not interested in doing that. It looks like if I ground a little off the trans tunnel right in front of the bolt I might be able to get it out. Has anyone tried this or have any input on it? the ground area would be concealed when the panel was replaced so cosmetically it would be fine. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

You are looking too far down. Lift the carpet behind the seats and you will find an access panel for the roll bar behind the driver's seat about 2/3 the way up. No need to remove the transmission tunnel.

Really? huh...
I know the one on the right side upright (looking toward the rear of the car from the driver seat) is about 2/3 up but the one on the left is down low unless I'm missing something? I'll look again when I get home. Thanks for replying.

Cut a small access hole in the side of the tunnel and pull the bolt out through it. Not a big deal at all.

..or just do what I did, pad the bar and wrap it with Black. :-)

I used roll bar foam and cut it/shaped it. I then wrapped it with Black vinyl 3m tape. It's functional (keeps my racing helmet from banging on metal) and looks real cool. It's was not meant to be a pristine look, It's a race car with plates.

I have wrapped and padded the roll bars in my roadsters for over 40 years. To do otherwise is just inviting blunt force trauma to your head. If you can touch your head to the steel of your unpadded roll bar you are just asking to turn a "light accident" in to a serious, and potentially fatal, one when your head smashes back in to it. Just a couple of years ago we had a thread where a guy was showing off at the country club and skidded in to the curb. Unfortunately his head smashed back in to the roll bar and that finished him off. Not a lot of damage to the car either.
