Differential housing gasket?
I'm going to change the fluid in my differential but I thought while it was empty it would be a good time to peek in there. Does anyone know what the part number is and/or where can I get a new gasket? I have the inboard rear brake set-up.

Don't you have a square pipe plug in the differential that you can unscrew?

I do have the square plug, I was asking about the gasket because while I have the fluid drained I wanted to pull the cover for inspection.

Jaguar differentials have a casting number at the lower right corner of the cover. All of the gaskets that I've seen for those type diffs had a 3931 number and then sometimes letters after the part number depending on where you bought the gasket from. But if the fluid comes out looking not metallic-ish, I wouldn't pull the cover off. It's not like you can wiggle something and tell that it's loose. If you have a problem back there, you're going to feel/hear it.

And in fact I don't use the plug at the bottom -- those tend to leak when you put them back in, even with the anaerobic sealant on the threads. I pump the old fluid out through the fill hole using surgical tubing, then I put pipe tape around the threads so it's easy to get the plug out the next time and that still keeps it from leaking. Remember to use your LSD additive along with Moroso climbing gear lube. The last time I did mine I needed about 1 and 3/4's bottles of the GM Limited Slip Additive Part #1052358 to eliminate ratcheting around corners when the Powr-Lok plates would disengage.

ERA and others recommend not to use a gasket, but a bead of RTV instead.

If you decide to use a gasket, you need one for a Dana 44 rear end. They're pretty common. Ask for a differential gasket for a 1967 Jeep CJ-5. Here's a link to the one you need from RockAuto. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...381238&jsn=892

Really if you're wondering how your Powr-Lok is doing, check the breakaway torque. Here's a thread on it: Breakaway Torque on ERA's Powr-Lok If the breakaway torque is within specs, and you don't have puddles under your differential, and when you drain your fluid you don't see glistening specs of metal in there, then practice the LITFA rule.

I just went through this whole exercise and could not find the correct gasket to order. Tried NAPA, Auto-zone and a few foreign car part places. First you need to know what type of rear end. Salisbury or Dana ? After I determined it was a Salisbury, still no luck so I finally gave up and used Permatex Black Max. Worked great and no leaks for the first time in 15 years!

CJ5 about 1975, diff gasket will fit both Jag variants in ERA.
Telling the parts guy it is a Jag will just make it hard.

I used the Permatex Ultra Rigid Grey with no gasket a few years ago, worked great

Went to rock auto for the hell of it and for a 67 cj5 I am coming up with part # 23006 as Patrick linked. I put in for a 75 CJ5 I am coming up with #23003. Same brand gasket and for a dana 44. I am assuming they are the exact same gasket, why the diff part numbers?

I went to Autozone, bought some of the blue gasket material, and made one myself. I used a hand held paper punch t make the holes. It looked great.
After it leaked numerous times, I took it off, used RTV, and had no more leaks.

23003 is for a Dana 30 rearend. That's not what you have. You need the 23006 for the Dana 44.

If you don't take the cover off, you don't have to worry about the correct differential gasket number.

Just went back on the site. My bad, you are absolutely correct! I was reading the wrong line when my old eyes shifted to the right to look at the applicable rear

Thread hijack.. what’s a good tool for unscrewing this in place? It’s too tight a space for anything I’ve got currently. Will definitely try the thread tape trick for putting it back.

It's just a 1/2" square pipe plug. A plumber's pipe socket works perfectly. Or, a 12 point socket will have a square grip in it that will fit. I prefer a plumber's socket.
