ERA shifter location TKX vs Toploader
On 755, I cut the stick on my TKO and moved it Left 3/4" to center it on the tunnel. It looked better to my eye. Most ERAs with the TKO have the stick slightly Right of center.
I am getting parts ready for 838 and it will have a TKX. If I cut the stick to move it Left again, I was thinking about moving it to the location a Toploader shifter would come thru.
My review of prints tells me I need to move the shifter back 1.6" and Left 1.75" to replicate the Toploader location. That puts the shifter Left of center.
Can anyone confirm that is correct? My transmission will be here soon and it is one more thing I can prep before the car arrives later this year.
Secondly, is the ERA shifter handle shortened or modified so that if I move it back it will be uncomfortable or not look like a Toploader?

John - Are you just wanting the location (dimension) of the shifter coming through the tunnel with a toploader in neutral? I have a Hurst and a spacer on top of the Hurst mount to raise it a little but I don’t believe the spacer affects the location - just the height. But if this will help I will get it today. Actually this is the shifter I bought off of you years ago.
Is this the look you are shooting for? My seats are mounted directly to the floor and back a little as I'm 6'2".

Dan,
You are correct. Ideally a dimension from the face of the bellhousing back to the shifter (in neutral) and then a dimension showing how far offset to the left the shifter is. The first dimension will be difficult with your car fully assembled.
Alternatively, if you could put a straight edge across your dash supports and then measure back to the shifter that would give me the answer. So measure from the back of the dash supports to the center line of the shifter. Then the dimension showing the left offset.
I appreciate the offer. I am trying to get all of my pre-work done so I can get the car on the road as soon as possible after delivery.
Maybe, Bob will weigh in as well.
I think the Toploader is 1.6" further back than the Tremec with the standard long input shaft, and 1" left of center.

Yes, my car is all together at this time but see if this helps. My transmission cover has some insulation under the carpet so getting a precise side to side dimension is a bit of a guess but the shifter seems to be coming out about 1/2 inch to the driver side down close to the carpet. When I cut the hole and mounted the shifter boot ring I just centered it on the console and with a toploader/Hurst I've had adequate clearance in all gears.

This is my toploader showing tail length and mount position relative to this. I think this is the mid-length tail housing - Not the Galaxie one and not the Sunbeam Tiger short one either (from memory).

FWIW we have a nice repro of the shift boot used on most 60's Fords as well as the Cobras and Tigers. It is done with a supple rubber with UV protectant embedded. Some boots are so stiff they "pull" on the lever and can cause the lever to pull the trans out of gear. https://www.timemachineauto.com/m38-...helby-csx.html

It's working, but if you scale them down to like 600 x 800 you could embed them directly for ease of viewing.
