buzzing noise from MSD ignition ctrl
Hello,
I'm having a strange problem. It's not severe, but it is frustrating and annoying. Basically, there is a buzzing sound emanating from my MSD ignition controler mounted under my dash on the passenger side. As expected it only happens when the engine is on and doesn't seem to change pitch or get noisier if the engine is revved. It's annoying because the buzz is audible when I am at a stop light. Help!

This is common with MSD. The only fix is to remove it from the car and send it to MSD. They will recoat the coil to provide more insulation, which removes the buzzing. There is no cost for the service, just the inconvenience of removing it from the car.

Thanks for the reply, James. I haven't run into this situation myself.

I just called the guys from MSD and they tell me that the controlers make that sound, and that nothing is wrong. Something is fishy here....I can't be the only guy that can hear these things. Although.....this could be the only downside to undercar exhaust!!???
So let's say that what these guys say is true....I wonder if there is some kinda sound deadening that I can put around the controler. I don't have to completely eliminate the sound, just suppress it. Is there some kind of tape that I can use? Doesn't even have to be that aesthetic as this is under the dash.

OK.. Please don't flame me for saying they all buzz.. But the older you get, the more you are around these cars the less you hear it. If yours doesn't buzz to the point you can't hear it GREAT.. Everyone I have ever had, seen or been near has done it. But then I am from California..
That said, you really do not want to cover the box with insulation. You can but it will tend to over heat the box. Even if it doesn't overheat it will shorten the life of the unit. As will engine heat, excessive vibration and water. You could try enclosing with something but not actiually covering the unit.

One suggestion
Although many of my cobra buddies don't get it, I also like early broncos. Anyway for my bronco I bought the off-road version of the msd box and it is supposedly filled with goo, it certainly doesn't buzz.
Just an idea.
Chuck
If you go that route make me a deal on your old msd box after you send it in for the "procedure".
