Kidney Bean
I was just noticing the kidney bean as seen on the early comp cars.
Is very similar to this wheel from American Racing
I wonder if anyone has ever approached them about making a six pin knockoff wheel out of them? I guess it probably depennds on what the casting looks like on the back side. But that sure would look correct on an early race car!

See thread on Cobra wheels - American Racing makes these in a variety of bolt patterns and offsets (as ordered) but, so far, only for bolt on applications.

Phil Schmidt Engeneering (PSE) makes Halibrand kidneybean reproduction wheels in various widths/backspacing for pindrive/bolt on (spline too?). He made the FIA wheels on my ERA. No website but an interesting catalog. Missplaced mine, probably somewhere on the desk here....

I was at Phils shop shortly after those wheels came on the market. I seem to remember him not being too happy about it. I considered those wheels when I was organizing my build but decided to go the pin drive route & PSE wheels. I am happy I did. Phil makes a better wheel that looks more accurate. The American wheel looks a little too clean IMHO.

Giving up on getting any wheels from PS Engineering. Not sure why or how they ran out of castings back in January but now that American Racing is making exactly the same wheels for less can't see any reason to hold out hope PS can solve it's supply problems.

Sorry to hear that. But, I can't say I would want to wait that long either.

Just guessing but probably there's no money/profit in making either the Ds or Kidney Bean bolt on wheels because the same wheel is hundreds less at American Racing. When the ERA manual is updated next time I would not be surprised if the recommended source changes.

Not 100% sure on this but I think the Bolt On & the pin drive wheel probably uses the same casting. If this is true it really wouldn't matter how popular the bolt on was so long as he could sell both. I also seem to remember seeing quite a few castings when i was there at one point but when he built my wheels he was waiting on the castings also. I think my timing worked out a little better than yours though. Not that it really mattered for me as I just wanted to get my dollies returned to I could spend the $300 dollars on some more parts.

The american wheel looks a lot cleaner, almost as if it was designed by a computer & cut in a CNC machine. I liked the PS wheel because of it's authentic hand tooled appearance.

Looks like I was wrong (not the first time), just saw my charge account has been debited for the set of wheels (Ds) I ordered from PS Engineering, so they must be "on the way." Now will have both "street" and "track" sets (and a spare for the trunk).
