Lost thread on ERA SSBC brakes?
I looks like the threads were lost form 8-2005 to 2-2006 Who was it who recently installed SSBC on an ERA? what is the part #? and how did they work.
The reason I ask I just am not happy with the performance with the stock 1 piston GM brake calipers and I would like to upgrade...

I am the one who started that thread a while back. They installed very easily. Mine were ordered in powdercoated blue and they look good as well. The car is still up on jackstands as we have plenty of snow and salt on the roads at this time (March 3, 2006) so I suspect I will be able to get out on the roads near the end of the month or early April for sure.
I have "before" stopping data with the standard GM brakes from 60-0 so I will be able to do a pretty good comparison after I break and bed in the new pads. What I plan on doing is running some hard (8 of each) 30-0 and 60-30 bed in stops and slows with ample time for the calipers to cool.

New Brake Calipers
I placed the order with summitt today. The Blue Powder Coated is $479
But I think it will be a worth while investment.

I installed the new SSBC calipers today, they installed easy in about an hour.
It is raining in nor cal now I will post my results...when it stops raining.

SSBC Installation
I noticed that the stock Camero brakes used on the ERA cars have a thin metal backing plate (pictures above). Would it be advisable to remove it for better brake cooling ? The plate covers most of the inside of the rotor and it looks like it would trap a lot of heat.

Considering that these cars are rarely driven in wet or dirty conditions, the backing plates are not especially useful. You can take them off without losing much.

Ssbc Installation
I completed the instalation this week and noticed that the backing plate also includes a bearing protection shield. I trimmed the back plate to keep the three mounting bolts and the bearing protecter but cut off all of the rest of the metal.
The installation was simple and the new calipers feel much better. Stopping power will be tested on Friday, May 12 at Lime Rock.

If you swapped these front calipers, how much adjustment of the front/rear bias (std jag rear) do you think would be required?

Jim,
The little 302 in my car seems rather quiet through the stock ERA pipes for an FIA car. I guess I'll find out if there is a problem with the db level.
I will be in the novice (first time) group so maybe the driving won't be that aggressive. Wish me luck.

The 2 x 43mm piston calipers will give you a little more braking in the front - probably not enough change to warrant a balance bar adjustment. It depends on the pad friction coefficient. A little dynamic testing should be the final word.

The SSBC calipers seem to feel a little better, a huge differance? no.
But they sure look nice.

Not a huge difference? That's somewhat disappointing. Aside from the improved looks, do you think it's worth the $$ to change?
Bob- Are the Widwood calipers that you offer a straight bolt-on or do they require modification? Would they offer more stopping power than the SSBC calipers?

The Wilwood/Sierra system requires steering knuckle modifications before chassis ~650.
