289 FIA exhaust question
Bob, do you have a drawing of the standard ERA 289 FIA exhaust secondary pipes? I'd like to do a custom exhaust that stays undercar but exits just in front of the rear wheels. (Custom exhaust = electrically actuated cutouts, one running straight through, the other running through a glass-pack. Rejoin into a single outlet just ahead of the rear wheels.)
Anyone have electrically actuated exhaust cut-outs on their Cobra? If so, how well do they work?
Am I asking for trouble when I go for inspection for registration?

I can't guarantee the angle between the downpipe and the turnout. I measured an older car that we have here right now. Lengths and other dimensions should be OK.

For inspection, I would tend not to press your luck with the cut-out.

I just did a 32 coupe in what you are describing. He used a muffler similiar to a magnaflow. It roared with the cutout, and had a mellow tone with the muffler. The muffler was straight through on one side, and had an S bend on the other. If the name of the muffler comes to me I will pm you.

Bob,
Thanks for the drawing. My FIA headers (from ERA) go straight down at the collector. I take it there is a 90-degree pipe to go from headers to the secondaries in your drawing? What are the dimensions of that pipe? Do you have a drawing for this as well?
Imagine2frolic: As much as I love the roar of open pipes, what I'm after is the hp gain at the flick of a switch---almost like have a NOS boost! Hhmm, maybe I'll embed the switch into the shift knob...

Nope. Mine are straight, no bend. Did I get the wrong pipes or something?
I think they are marked "289 FIA", but I'll check when I get back to my shop.
Sounds like I'll need to exchange them.

Actually, I think I initially read the drawing incorrectly.
On the secondaries 3.500" radius turn (in red), does that also sweep upward at 50 degrees as well as take the 90 degree turn inward? If that is the case, then my headers would be correct with no bend.

Yes, the drawing should have been more explicit in that I "flattened" both bends out into the same plane. The ends are rotated as shown in the end shots.
