Canton or other oil thermostats
I thought another time to install an oil thermostat in my ERA. Until now I used duke tape but the satisfactory with temperatures below 72° F isn't enough.
The car is equipped with the three Brake/clutch reservoir cans. For this reason I haven't a lot of space.
Who have mounted an oil thermostat on his car ?
Who can show me some pictures ?

I have the same canton oil t-stat sitting on my shelf in the garage which I have not installed yet, but am going to in the next few weeks. However, I have a question for you.
Did you have to cut down the threads on the fitting that screws into the "out to oil cooler" hole? On my t-stat, it does not look like you can screw in a std fitting without the threads hittig the plunger that is inside the t-stat.
Also, Loadco, were you able to make the set up work using the existing oil lines on your ERA? If not, how much new oil line did you need and how many fittings- trying to figure out what I need to order.

Chaplin,
I used the fittings supplied from Canton to be able to adapt to AN fittings. To be honest I did not see a problem as you described but I doubt I really looked that close. I don't have any leaks so I guess all is OK. I had to make up new lines. Sorry I don't remember what I needed to purchase to make it work. My memory is not that good anymore.

Walter,
The Mocal is much more compact and you should be able to just intercept the lines as they go out to the cooler.
The Canton is a good unit but it is so big.
From what I understand the Mocal are used on Porsche's installed from the factory.

Thanks Loadco- my t-stat did not come with any fittings from canton. I picke up some standard fittings and they look too long. Maybe I'll call Canton and see if they can send them to me.
Tony- that mocal unit opens at 180, which may not be hot enough. The canton opens at 215 I believe.

Chaplin, when I ordered my Canton unit from them I also ordered the -10AN fittings that they sold (assuming they worked with the unit, which they do).

The fittings from Canton install with an O-ring, they definatelty are not pipe thread.

Ok, here's the deal. I called Canton today and the fittings they sell for the unit have shorter threads than the std fittings that I bought from Summit (or wherever I got them). Their tech told me to just go ahead and cut mine down, so that is what I am going to do. And mine do have the o-ring seal as well.

Rob- That is a sweet looking set up, and I like the fact that it can be turned on or off manually. I have been eyeing that unit for a while, but it aint cheap!

Chap,
180 is plenty hot enough.
If you push it the temp will go over 215 with no oil t-stat.
It is the cruising around with no load on the engine and winter that I want to get the oil temp up faster.

Walter, this "sandwich" style thermostat is another option for a set up such as yours. The female/input of the thermostat threads are 1/2" NPT and the male side fittings (capped in this shot) I used are are 12AN.

Tony-
With my old motor, even in peak summer weather with stop and go traffic and the occasional blast through country roads, I could never got the oil temp above 90C, which if my math is correct is about 195 F.

If I do some brisk driving my oil temp will go to 100*C. This is also with my Aviad oil pan which takes the temp in a different local than my Canton pan did.
In the winter time is my biggest concern. and 180*F is fine.
It is alot better than the needle not moving.
