ERA #287 - Battery replacement Help
Hello,
I have an ( 427 ERA #287 ) and the battery needs to be replaced. From ERA they say that they use a battery from Interstate I46 - This battery is discontinued. Does anyone know of a battery and maybe a closed cell battery that will fit? I have a 427 side oilier in the car. The battery is under the front right fender - Yes I have to take valve cover off to take out the battery.
I already tried to recharge the batter.
I'm in Plymouth MA.

The only thing you need to match is the lenght , width , height , 12 volt

So the seating on the tray does not matter as long as I get something to fasten it down with?

In my ERA 629, I use battery 24F. You need to look closely before you buy though because you need one with the the little hold down lip on the end of the battery. Most of the ones you find will have the hold down lip on the side. I think Exide brand has the hold down lip on the end. I picked mine up at Kragens. I haven't been able to find one of the newer dry (or gel?) type that will fit without changing the battery tray.

Just bought one at Sears (Die Hard). Expensive little bugger (about $130). Hold down lip on the ends. On the newer ERAs after chassis 731), the battery is accessed through the front whell well.

Do you know the number on the Die Hard? I have no problem taking off the Valve Cover. Need to do it - no other way right now.

I have the car in my warehouse. Can get the number of the Sears battery for you tomorrow off the receipt. I think it was the only 24F they made. Rated at only 550 "cranks". They had it right on the shelf though. No problem.

Great thanks...... I want to flip this thing tomorrow.... Any thoughts on valve cover re-install. I ordered the gasket ( rubber ) don't i use some type of cement as well... yes i'm new to this.

I use a gasket adhesive between the gasket and head. Spray on and light. Everybody has their own ideas. My call is to use just enought to keep the gasket in place. You'll have to scrape it off again someday.

The "24F" is a battery group size. It's a standard system used by most battery manufacturers. If you don't have Kragen parts stores where you
are, you may have Checker or Schucks--same store, different names in different areas of the country. HTH.

Valve Cover Gasket
I did mine differently .. first clean the old gasket and adhesive from both the head and cover with an adhesive remover or lacquer thinner.
If you have Edelbrock heads, put a dab of silicone gasket maker on the little gap where the head and intake manifold meet and trowel it smooth with a blade. Let it cure before the next step.
Then stick the new gasket to the valve cover with Permatex Hi Tack or silicone, your choice. Do not put any adhesive on the head side. If rubber gasket, just bolt it on. If cork gasket, rub the head side with grease to saturate the gasket. You need to be able to remove the valve covers for valve lash adjustments from time to time. This way, you can do that and not need a new gasket every time.
Don't over-torque the cover bolts .. 5 ft-lbs is enough.

It's rubber - So Permatex on the Valve side / 5 ft-lbs torque -
24F group size battery - AWSOME !!!! God this site rocks.....

Champion brand has a 24F with the proper tabs for the hold down. Cost me $45.00 about a year ago.

I need to buy my battery soon. ERA recommends a size 47, but none of the premium suppliers like Odessey, Optima, or Sears/Platinum offer this size. In my car, the battery is installed through the fender well panel on a tray ahead of the right footbox. It has hold downs on the short ends. I seem to remember several people here use Optima, etc. Is there another size that anyone has used successfully? This thread mentions a 24 but I'm not sure if it works. Thanks.
