Default Wiper Motor cap question

My wiper motor has a cap on the bottom. Seems to be to keep the internal fluid from leaking or just maybe a shipping cap. I took it off and wiped up the oil. Is this a permanent fixture or can I take it off permanently?

That's something new...

Keep the cap on. My guess is that it is supposed to be an oil reservoir for the bottom bearing.

It helps dissipate the massive amount of heat from the wiper motor. That's a little known reason as to why Cobras tend to overheat in the rain; it's the additional heat load gain from the wiper motor.

Is that why I break out into a sweat every time I drive one in the rain?

Bob:

I got the motor from you guys so...I've had TR6's and had the exact same motor setup and never have seen that cap. Best I can describe it is looks like a packing cap...it looks crappy which is why I want to take it off. I know, I can do whatever I want but I'm just trying to get the official answer.

As you can see, Doug left mine on. There shouldn't be a lot of oil in there, but there should be some. From page 50 of the ERA manual:

Quote:
Put 1 or 2 drops of oil in the lower bearing of the armature
housing. Excess oil will contaminate the brushes later on.
Now it's possible that the modifications that Doug does to the Wiper Motor require that little cap -- you can see from the manual that the wiper motor assembly is no simple issue. Bob should be able to get you an answer pretty quickly on what that little cap does.
