For those of us who are truly anal...

... about understanding our ERAs, I fished out the following on Autolite voltage regulators that was contained in an automotive textbook from a class I took back in the 70's. Clearly I was napping the day we went over this part in class. :3DSMILE:

Ahhhh, nostalgia... I remember back when I used to file the regulator contacts and adjust the voltage by bending things. I think that might have been just for generators, though.
(Remember them?)

update...broke another speed cable today :(.

After talking to Doug, Fred and others I thought I had everything right. Cable turned freely, reverser seem to turn with ease...the guage itself was a little tight but I thought that would loosen up being new and all. NOPE...it locked up(at least I can't even turn with my fingers...i could before but with some effort.) It jumped around for a about 3 seconds (like it did when I first drove it) and then complete crapped out.

Bob..at a minimum I need another cable but unless there is a way to get this guage flowing freely, I think that is where the problem is.

..fun, fun, fun....

Sorry to hear this Kramer. I would suggest getting an air drill and breaking the gauge/cable/reverser in on the bench. Mine was pretty stiff until I got about 100 mi on it this way. Since then, I seem to be OK (knock on wood).

That is good information to know about the idiot light and it being part of the circuit. I believe if I had that type of set up I would wire in a toggle switch that I could use to bypass the light just in case it went out while I was out driving. I would never have guessed it was a part of the circuit either. I never had one in my cobra as I used a voltmeter.

I had the whole assembly out of the car with the drill just like you mentioned above..gauge, reverser and cable...checked everything first by itself, then assembled, then drill...then the cable broke....I am convinced now it is a bad gauge b/c it was really hard to turn by hand and not it won't even budge.

Ck the cable end at the speedo

Don't forget to check and see if the square drive end might be too long from the brass ferrule to the end. If it is, it will jam the instrument when you tighten down the retaining nut. I had to trim mine by 1/8".

Thanks Sammy, Since I had the boys in connecticut handle all the dash installl and wiring I assumed that was already done as the needle seemed to seat nicely against the speedo, but I am beginning to think that could be part of the problem as well. I guess I am on hold now for a while until I can get a new cable...and most likely a new gauge.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Kramer

Sure does sound like the speedo gauge is the problem.
