Clutch & brake fluid
Can someone confirm on a 427 car the brake and clutch res take the same fluid?

They use the same fluid. DOT 3/4 -- NOT the newer fancy DOT 5 stuff. Do not be concerned that the DOT 3/4 says " synthetic" or "partially synthetic," or if it doesn't say anything at all, it doesn't matter. |

Frank: Got it...I have a bottle and a half left from the initial install. I'm going to add some to each res until I can figure out where the leak is coming from. I have access to a lift which I am going to bring the car to tuesday night. I also have a small oil leak as from somewhere as well. |

Frank, Since you're running an FE like me you're going to have small oil leaks all the time. I have them from the rocker covers and just live with it. I put the car on my lift once a month to wax the frame and underside of the car and clean it up then.
All part of the experience.

Did not have a brake fluid leak but started one!
When working on or near the lines from the remote reseviors to the master cylindrers be careful. I recently replaced my clutch master on my ERA and somehow created a very small leak at the rubber hose that connects the resvior to the metal line. Of course I did not see it until a week later. I had small hose screw clamps on these lines already! I now replace the rubber hoses when replacing master cylinders, etc. It seems that fresh rubber lines (designed to carry brake fluid) work well when first installed.

It depends on which brake set you got with your car. With the larger optional brakes, Doug recommends the Super Blue fluid (it is DOT 4). You can get it from Pegasus. |

Ahh, but the "new and improved" Castrol GT LMA is DOT 4. I just flushed and filled with it and it is easily distinguished from the Super Blue, so alternating between the two makes flushing easier.

That's why superblue comes in two colors. So you can tell when the system is completely flushed.

Castrol GT LMA has served me personally well over the last 20 years-- it is my first choice for brake fluid.

Just in case anybody is interested i have run dot5 in my Hi Tech since it was built in 1993. Never had a problem with it and i have a full and hard pedal all the time. The only drawback is that its really expensive,but thats o.k. since i don't have to worry about paint damage if it gets on the body,and the fact that its not hydroscopic and i don't have to change it as oftenas regular fluid.
