With a quick-release steering wheel you GOTTA take the wheel with you every time you leave the car, or somebody else will. I say forget the quick-release and bolt the wheel down and secure the car in a normal way.

Unless you know the QR is there, you don't see it. I rarely park mine where I can't see it so I've never been too worried about that. You can also lock it in the trunk out of sight. Patrick is right most people don't mess with the car anyway.

The tonneau is also nice for the occassion when mindless parents come along and think that the open car makes a nice photo op for their kid! Happened at a car show at the NHRA museum. We left the cars and went in to the museum. Mine, the one with the tonneau was unmolested. My friend's, without, had a kid jumping up and down in the driver's seat and his parents taking photos! I thought my friend was going to launch them all into the next county!

I never cease to be amazed at how people behave with other people's property. I bet that they didn't even think they were doing anything wrong, and couldn't understand why your friend was upset.

Ray, how close are you to ERA? Jim's suggestion is the best if you're within a reasonable distance. If not, then enlist Bob P. early on to engage in deception, misdirection, and trickery in order to pass inspection.

Jim, patrickt - I was going to have a chat with Peter on this to find out what's involved in either covering it, or how hard it would be to change out.

My car made it back to ERA today from Tony despite all the rain.

I have ERA 756 that was completed by Peter's crew last summer. It is spec'd out virtually the same as what you are looking at doing, with the exception of the heater, painted white sidepipes, and rivets along the edge of the hood in addition to the scoop. The rivets look better and better after each polishing on the Porsche Slate Blue paint. I can honestly say I would not change a thing after driving 1,500 miles or so. Joe from Danbury Machines also did my engine, a 427 stroked to 468 with dual quads and Tony did my paint. I only live 30 miles from ERA so I went, and still go often to talk with the boys. It was great following the build weekly, in person. I was able to get out yesterday for a 50 mile ride after work before the rains came in. There is nothing like the sound of the FE through the sidepipes.

I really did like your car, and Peter and I did spend some time looking at it while going over my build list at the time. That's likely the reason for the similarities in the build. If you look at the pictures I had taken at the time, they were getting ready to install the sidepipes.

That picture was taken a couple of weeks before delivery. I changed the front parking lenses to clear, put bumpers (without the hoops) in place of the quickjacks, put the Talbot style chrome mirror on fender instead, and this past winter had the stainless steel spinners polished. It looks even better than before. I am extremely pleased.

I have to stop by ERA later this week. I am looking forward to checking your car out.

Gary, your car looked great when I saw it, and like the finishing touches that you've added. As it stands right now, I won't be able to get up to ERA until July. so you may get to see it before me!

Well, I was finally able to touch base with Peter as well as see Tony's work on the finish. Tony did a great job on the paint, and overall I'm very happy with the finish.

Of course I was hoping the full size rendition of the colors would look as good as the samples I was looking at. I must say it looks even better than I imagined it would.

patrickt - thanks for the all the help and the "good choice". I'm sure most of us went through many a restless time agonizing over trying to pick the 'right' colors. I really didn't plan going with blue in the beginning but found myself always comparing the color of the moment to this blue, so that's how I came to select this color.

marcalan - thanks for your thoughts - I thought I would let Peter have the car for a couple of weeks before I asked him when it would be done. Maybe someone that has been down this path can estimate?

ZOERA-SC7XX - Thanks, yes it does look like I'm on the home stretch at this point, and with most all the options settled on, just a matter of waiting a little longer...

A lot of it is "luck-based." Meaning there isn't an unusual hold-up on a part you want (even small ones, like TP headlamps) or in building the rear end, or somebody comes down with the flu, or their father-in-law gets sick, etc. Seriously, it's those type of things that extend out what is probably a pretty normal build.
