Now that's funny.
Considering that TKOs don't come with the shifter handle already bolted to them, I would call this a user error.

Well, doesn't come with the car, but they do have one.
Patrick, get rid of that backward Mustang shifter Jerry-rig and relocate the shifter to the correct location. (not to be confused with the "original" location)
If you'd keep a coat hanger in your tool kit (like your supposed to, along with duct tape and epoxy putty) you'd have been able to get this fixed in a jiffy.
If all else fails the passenger harness also serves as a tow harness (passenger=propulsion), although you need to make sure the cattle prod has fresh batteries.

The Shifter Is Actually Pretty Nice...
Someone put some thought, albeit no LocTite, in to the ERA shifter. I'm not sure if you can see it in this photo but it actually angles to the left a bit. In this shot the shaft is directly vertical and "flat" as it would be up against the Tremec linkage. It's quite comfortable and the welds appear to be quite stout. I doubt I'll have any more problems with it. Be that as it may, please feel free to continue piling on, although for the life of me I'm not sure why....

Along with the vibration that comes naturally to these cars, you are also working the shifter A COUPLE HUNDRED TIMES A DAY just going for a putt.
This has also happened to me once.

Use that blue stuff. The red will cause heart aches.
I have this exact thing happend two years ago. On the freeway and lost all but third. Stuck a screwdriver through the bolt hole to drive home.

Welcome to the club. Happened to me about half way through an 800 mile trip. Up side was the screw/bolt was still under the boot so I could just put it back in. Lots of blue locktite since then whenever I take the bolts out.

I'm resurrecting an old thread, since this happened to me today, but because I had read this thread a while ago I knew that my shifter was loosening before it completely went out. Once I felt a little sloppiness in the shifts and a wiggle in the shift handle, I knew exactly what it was. A quick stop at the side of the road, a lift of the boot, and a tightening of the bolts on the shifter cured my ills. Once I got home, blue loctite sealed the deal.
It's nice to anticipate problems, because of this forum, before they get full grown.

Maybe this is mostly a problem with ERA's.....you know, lower build quality, etc....

Sheesh a top loader is no gaurentee it won't happen with the linkage as well. I've been there with sloppy linkage, about to panic, WTF?, struggling to get home. Linkage was loose, no big deal. Well THATS easy to say AFTER you get home!! The Steeda uses a bolt that screws into the shift linkage AND a nut on the other side of that to lock the bolt in place. It would be pretty hard for that setup to ever come loose.
Good pic of your trans tunnel by the way, clearly it sets up much higher on the later ERA's than on the early ones? Or, your trans is sitting lower in the frame than mine is? My new TKO is same height, based on drive shaft angle and engine air cleaner clearance, as the top loader was before. But the TKO shifter sits well above the trans tunnel. I figure I will add a piece of plywood the full length of the top, round the edges off, screw it in place, cut a hole out for the shifter, add some new carpet to the whole affair. I need to re-carpet anyway...
By the way, there is a piece of rubber between the shifter lever and the TKO shifter linkage, you know, where the shifter bolts on. The Steeda install paper work said to leave that in, it helps isolate vibrations from the trans up through the shifter handle. Went for a LONG drive today, man I'm really loving this new 5 speed!

On one of my first runs I was cruising down the freeway and i had passed my exit because I really didn't want to stop playing yet ...my mistake . I U turned around about 3 mi. down the road and was headed back when TKO got hard to get in gear ? about a mi. from home I pushed the clutch in and whamo the pedal went to the floor. The 2 jam nuts domed spacer and maybe some other junk were gone , as luck would have it I broke down right in front of a hardware store ! 2 6mm nuts and a washer and I was limping home .I had to push the car on the entrance of a driveway to gain access but everyone was thrilled to help push the COBRA..WD
