Dyno run on Wednesday (4/20) ...

Here are the numbers for the Iron Block & Heads 302 (306ci):

HP 362 @ 6100rpm Torque 355 @ 4500rpm

Here is the rest of the story …

For those that have been flowing along, you know that I decided to work with Tom Lucas (FE Specialties) to build a motor well suited to a 'Street' 289 Cobra. After a few phone calls and emails, I went up to visit his shop in Sacramento. Tom's focus is FEs … but he also does small blocks and other motors as well. Along with Aluminum heads, he is an expert in working with Iron heads, really getting them to flow. We talked for quite a bit, going over the different parameters and trade offs involved, then went for a tour of the shop.

What I was looking for in a motor is essentially a rough modern equivalent of the venerable 289 Hi-Po that went into the a lot of the CSX2000 cars, GT-350's and the like back in the day. Wanted a vintage look, but did not necessarily need to be 'period correct'. A motor that will start and run well hot or cold, can handle idling in traffic and not 'fussy'. Iron block and heads 302, that runs well on pump gas and minimal maintenance other than oil changes and plugs. My goal was around 300HP and 300 ft lbs.

------------------
------------------
------------------

Below is some information and comments from Tom …

Here are some motor specs:

1. Camshaft:
** Duration intake 276, exhaust 282
** Duration at .050 int. 224 exh. 230
** Lift int. .513, exh. .513
2. Compression 9.8 to 1
3. Stroke- Stock 3.00
4. Bore- 4.030
5. CID 306ci
6. Head flow: Iron 302 head, 1970 casting: Fully Street ported: Intake 216cfm, Exhaust 182cfm
7. Valve Size: Intake 1.85, Exhaust 1.55
8. Intake: Blue Thunder Cobra Dual Plane Repop
9. Pistons: TRW Forged L2482-030
10. Sealed Power Moly Rings 5/64
11. Cloyes True Roller Timing set
12. Aviaid 9 quart oil pan, pick-up and tray
13. RPM Range 2500-6400
14. HP 362 @ 6100rpm* Torque 355 @ 4500rpm.* 313 Torque @ 3000rpm
15. Distributor: Petronix Flame Thrower with Petronix Coil for that original look!!
16. Holley 650 cfm List 4777 DP Carb.
17. 1 inch phenolic open carb spacer!!
*
Red line is 6200rpm. Should not take it over 6600rpm due to the hyd roller cam!!
*
This small block has a great torque curve and a very balanced attitude!! Should drive very nicely and not give much up on the apexes of tight turns(313 torque at 3000rpm)

------------------
------------------
------------------

… I really like the way the motor looks! It sounds awesome, especially at higher RPMs. Can't wait to get it into the car, the drivability should be excellent.

Tom was a pleasure to work with and needless to say I am very happy with the results!

2136 Is Headed West !!!

Early this week, Peter and crew put the finishing touches on 2136 and got her all set to go … another ERA masterpiece ready for the road.

Got a call Thursday (4/21) that Intercity picked up the car and once a few more cars are loaded, the truck is headed West next week. Depending on the weather and how the route is planned, 2136 should be here in about (2) weeks!

I have my insurance coverage all setup, went with Robbin at Midwest Classic Insurance. Very easy to work with and he came well recommend by many here on CC.

All I have to say at the moment is …

Jeff,

You should be getting close with 789 ... I placed the order for 2136 in 5/09 and it does take some time as each car is unique and custom made, but it's well worth the wait.

Look forward to seeing how your car progresses, Peter will take good care of you

Tim, This is FANTASTIC NEWS.
Call me when you know which day it will arrive. I will take the day off if possible and hang with you. I guess I'll take the engine hoist with me if you want.

Thanks Glen ... kind of a low key look.

The motor sounded great on the dyno stand, especially in the higher RPM range, can't wait to see how it performs in the car

I got a nice call yesterday from the Intercity driver with an update. Last week the truck picked up my car from ERA, first one to go on. Other cars have been picked up along the way and they are now in Michigan. The truck pretty much crisscrosses the country and should be in Northern California towards the end of next week.

2136 Is Home !

Today May 6th at noon, an Intercity Transport truck pulled up right on time. Paul and Linda were very friendly & professional and did an outstanding job from start to finish. We would receive periodic calls as the truck traveled across the US and were able to firm up the delivery time earlier this week. They carefully uncovered & unloaded the car along with (5) boxes of parts, and the paperwork was quick and easy. It could not have gone better, excellent service!

The car … WOW … the car looks absolutely beautiful, I could not be happier The fit and finish is first rate, I'll post some detail photos once I have had a chance to unpack everything. Thank you Peter and Crew !!!

Here are photos from the unload …

Hi Tim,
Fantastic news. It must have been like waiting for the arrival of a new baby!
Car looks great (of course!)...actually the truck looks OK too. So...busy weekend ahead?
Looks like the Mustang is out in the street already...
Cheers!

Tim,

Congratulations! The Cobra looks great! You have pics of the engine?

Okay, so your photo has confirmed for me that my quickjacks have been reinstalled correctly (e-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y tells me I have them on backwards...) for the FIA.

Are you going to take some time off from work? I'd recommend it. Limiting assembly to weekends and evenings breaks up the build momentum---and you'll be chomping at the bit while at work, anyway.

Have fun, and again, congratulations!
Doug

Tim,
I bet the excitement and adrenaline must have been goin' a bit there when you heard the rumble of that ICL truck come pulling up. Very nice, can't wait to see it. Do you pick up your motor and bring it home or install the motor over at the engine shop?

I invited myself over to Tim's yesterday evening and met his entire family... ERA builds a top notch car. The sub-frame for the IRS was beautifully welded, every wire is labeled (numbered and color coded), car comes with a wiring diagram, body paint is beautiful (although a bit dusty from the transport), and seats are real comfy too!

The "ice tray" grill is actually a very well made piece. However, Tim, I would recommend that you get some kind of slim but high-density foam or just weather strip for the bottom of the grille. It rattles a bit much for my taste and it might wear into the paint over time.

Neighbors dropped by to see the new baby and the birds thankfully kept their distance.

Can't wait to see an engine in this thing. Also, I should introduce you to SJDave about the riv-nut gun he's got for your planned tunnel. I think you actually have the same idea as he did on his; let me know so he can drive over and show you his setup because I'm thinking it's really close to what you wanted if not exact.
