Not that I (or many here) would not have made the same series of small misjudgements, but it does reinforce the "check everything first" philosophy. In this case, the correct action would have been to pull the belt and give a quick evaluation to the spin of the waterpump and alternator - maybe with a rubber wheel chucked in a drill. No particular noise or vibes? Look at the crank pulley, maybe even pull it off and look to be sure.

*Then* plunk down on replacement parts.

Gosh, this 20-20 hindsight thing is so EASY!

Believe it or not, after 3 or 4 tries I got pretty good at it .... after 3 or 4 stethoscopes and an ear lobe later. I've been sorta hopin' that Pat might post his up.

Glad that you found the problem and it wasn't anything really serious. I too had an experience using a stethoscope trying to track down a rattling noise. With the scope everything pointed to the front end and after taking the belts off I could still hear just a little of the metal to metal noise. Finally tossed the scope and got under the car and one of the exhaust pipe hangers was loose and it was viberating against the frame.
