427 side oiler short block fair price???

Guys,
A friend of a friend has a 427 side oiler short block for sale. I have not seen it yet.

The owner claims the block is a 68 service block. 428 crank, lemans rods, flat top pistons, roller cam, timing set and oil pan. The block has one sleeve.

The owner claims Keith Craft built the engine more than 10 years ago, before he started his own shop. I am not sure I can verify any of his story.

He replaced this engine with a FE stroker built on a new block.

What is a fair price for this engine? What compression will Edelbrock heads give with flat top pistons? Anything I should be looking for when I inspect this engine.

Asking price is $3500.

Check with DSC for prices on FE parts.
I would have him take the motor apart so I could check the part number and look at all the parts.
There is always a reason why the motor is not running in a car. Buyer beware.

3500 bucks for a 68 SO block alone sounds like it needs a long hard look.

I'd be skeptical.
It's been stroked with a 428 crank. I'd rather have the 427 crank.

Grubby John the price is fine. The seller seams to have told you the truth about the build and the sleeve in the cylinder. If KCR built the motor, it should have been tested and setup to specs. There is nothing wrong with a 452 motor if it does have a 428 crank in it. Buy the thing, send it to a machine shop, have it gone through. If it falls the checkout put it back together and get your money back. You may have to go through court system. My only concern is the one sleeve in the block and what happened

Was this a boat motor? I wouldn't rev this thing to 6,500 rpms either. Would make sure it has a HVHP oil pump and #80 psi spring and min 6 quart oil pan with 1 extra quart for running.

Update;
I spoke to the owner in prepartion to drive 2 hours to see the engine. It is bored .045" over.

I will pass on this one.

In this economy I would have to believe that the FE builders with big inventories would like to move a few blocks and parts. Have you called George Anderson, Barry at Survival or Keith Craft to see what they might have?
