Default FE Identification Help!!!

Hey guys I need someones expertise. I have a line on a potential motor to rebuild. This guy says he's 99% sure it's a 428. Hmmm so I asked him for #'s and this is what he sent me.

Heads ----C7AE-A
Block------C6ME-A
Crank couldn't see any #s C2AE on one of the main caps
Trans. T18-!E 10 splines

Can anyone decifer these #'s for me?
Also the tranny is a 4 spd std out of a truck I think. Is it a toploader?

Any help would be awesome!!!

George

George,

Per the block identification book that I have that is a 1966 Mercury engine. My book shows that it could be a 66 to 70 428 cubic inch engine. But they use the same codes for other Re engines in that era also. I can't find the head numbers in the limited list that I have, but they sound familiar. It says this could be a Police Interceptor, may or may not be drilled for hydraulic lifters. Look for oil galleries.

Someone with a better book will have to help you with the rest. I looked at my 428 SCJ and it has a different head number.

From fordification.com:

C6ME-A These are all possibles:
'66-'67 410 c.i.d.
'?? 390 c.i.d.
'68 - '76 360 c.i.d.
'?? 359, 361, 389, & 391 c.i.d.
'66-'67 352 c.i.d.
'?? 330MD c.i.d. Medium & Heavy Duty Truck
'66-'70 428 c.i.d. 428-4V, Police Interceptor, Cobra Jet, May Or May Not Be Drilled For Hydraulic Lifters… Look For Oil Galleries

The heads seem to be kind of a universal 390-428 head. Google the number it's self and see what you come up with. Here's an example:

Because,as illustrated above, the casting #'s are used on a variety of engines, the crank # is pretty important for identity. Bore would narrow it down, but again, bores were used among various FE engines. The casting number should be on the #7 counterweight, although some had a number also on the #1. That is the 3.98 stroke crank, but I think most the other cranks I have here ( 390 as well as a 360) have the numbers located in the same area. Here are some of the crank #'s C6ME, 1U,1UB,A,1UA, B. Any of those would indicate a factory 428 crank, a couple of the numbers are the same as the 410( 390 block,428 crank).

My book says it could be a:
1966 352
1968-76 360
1966 390
1966-67 410
1966-68 428

Check the bore size and the crank.

The C7AE-A heads are either 1966-68 (390) 67-70cc w/2.02 intake and 1.55 exhaust valves or 1967 (390 410 428HP) 71-74cc w/2.02 intake and 1.55 exhaust valve

What everyone has said above. The only thing I can add is in one book I have, the C7AE-A heads are listed as '66-'67 Comet / Fairlane with AIR bosses. The book put the word "air" in caps, not me.
If the crank is a C2AE-B, it is listed for the following:
'62 390 HP
''63 Police
'61-'62 Mercury / T-Bird

I just got a call back from the seller and the crank has a 2U on it. That would probably make it a 390 cid right? No idea what year it is.

2U is a 1966-73 390 car & truck crank (3.78 stroke).

If it is a standard bore standard crank then there is a lot of engine to work with there no matter what size it is if the price is tollerable.............

sounds like the common denominator here is truck, you mentioned that the 4 speed is out of a truck, that would not be a top loader. 360 or 390 engine would be most common.

Dont forget the drillbit size trick in between the cylinders -- you can use the cylinder cores as a guideline for CI.

Thanks for all the help again guys, rustybob I believe it's been rebuilt once before and raced on a oval ??? it's very very cheap.
I guess the tough call here is whether it's worth getting all machined or just buy a eagle or pond block from someone like KC and be better off in the long run.
What i think I'm trying to do is save cash on acquiring a FE!!!!! Is that even possible, lol or am I still dreaming?

George,

FEs were designed to cost a lot I believe. But once in good shape they will run for a long time if taken care of.

TTG....mine is a rebuilt rebuild that runs just fine but i think i got lucky as it just needed rings and bearings and gaskets to get it going again after it sat far a couple of years..a good machine shop will be able to tell you if its any good and if its cheap enough you may be getting some parts you wount have to chase all over town to find........
