Hi Rick,

I think you are making the same observational error that I made in believing that the inner diameter was a separate smaller bush. I don't believe it is. It appears to be the remains of a counterbore in the pilot bush. The OD of the bush appears to be standard. I'll measure the ID of what appears to be the counterbore when I get home.
The bellhousing had been centred by SA and the numbers are still written on the face of it.
I'll try to measure the free play on the input shaft as well.

Paul

I've just measured the OD of the bush and it is 2", which is somewhat larger than the OD of the bush in the link provided earlier in the thread at 1.853". Can anyone tell me if the steel "Le Mans" crank uses a different sized bush?

Having spoken to Bill at SA, he was able to confirm that mine and Rick's first impressions were in fact correct. This is a 2-part bearing and the inner one has been pushed back by the gearbox input shaft when the gearbox was installed.
He has kindly offered to send me a new 2-part bearing and gearbox input shaft seal.

Thanks again for your interest and input.

Paul

Default double check the measure ments before installing the trans

Fatboy Paul Gald Bill is helping you out. Just recheck the measure ments. The other thing is on GM trannys the input shaft could be too long and pressing the inner bushing to the back of the crank. There is a installation note about ford motor and GM trannies that you need to remove .380 off the input shaft for this problem. Lake wood has it under their side notes. I did. As said before if you don't the thrust bearing will be worn out premature. Good Luck Rick L.

Back a year or so ago there were some ford fe cranks floating around that had the wrong size counter bore in the end for the pilot bearing---there were some various ways of getting around the problem--maybe do a search but in the end three things must be correct---
OD of bushing fit the crank

ID of bushing fit the pilot snout of the trans imput shaft

Imput shaft lenght match bell housing depth from trans face to pilot

All are very basic items that are often ignored by in experienced people

Thanks Jerry & Rick,

I've checked and rechecked the three important measurements and all of them are as they should be.
I've fixed the pilot bearing by removing both parts and reversing and then reinstalling the inner bearing into the outer, before reinstalling both into the crank.
I have measured the lateral float at the very end of the gearbox shaft without the seal in place at roughly 1.0-1.5mm. Is that normal or excessive?

Is the input shaft seal anything special or should I be able to get a suitable one from any seal supplier?

Paul,

David Kee transmissions sells full rebuild kits - I've just ordered one for my toploader which I've just removed for the same reasons as you.
