Should I run an oil cooler?
Hey guys
I have a vintage 65 MR sideoiler we just rebuilt. 444HP at 5700rpm and 455ftlb torque. Solid lifter flat tappet cam.
I am trying to build a replica of a 66 S/C
This will be a street car for crusing. Do I need to run a 'stat on my oil cooler? I have the mocal cooler -10 AN lines and the mocal 'stat.
Your thoughts?
I did a search and couldn't find a good answer.

You will likely have trouble getting the oil up to temp much less needing to cool it. I disconnected mine and capped the hoses on my FE.

You can get a sandwich style thermostat that mounts between the oil filter fitting and the filter. It only allows circulation to the oil cooler when the oil temp rises above 220 degrees.

If you run a cooler run a stat. The only time you would use it would be on a road coarse running it hard and down shifting.

Since I live in the deep South where summers get to upper 90`s to low 100`s , I thought I needed an oil cooler . Long story short ... my oil temps during summer never got over 160 degrees F . Added an oil temp thermostat unit and problem disappeared . Now temps , even in the winter easily get to 180 and the water temp is more stable .
If you just want the look , do what several others here suggest ... put the cooler in , but don`t connect it .

What kind of oil cooler thermostats are most of you using and where did you buy it?

I use C & R Nascar type crossflow double pass radiators with oil cooler/heater in the turn around tank(tank where coolant is reversed to go back across) the engine thermostat then controls both engine and oil temps. also less plumbing/fittings
Electric fan choices are Viper, Tautas, Lincoln Mk8

I'd like to keep my existing radiator and oil cooler so the sandwich style mentioned by lineslinger sounds easier to add. Linselinger, where did you get yours?

Springin
I weighed the question for a long time. Finally, I installed a stock spin-on filter and capped the cooler lines out of sight from above and been happy ever since.
Leaks suck.

I agree, no oil cooler. I have one and put plexiglass over the front of it. I also have the correct thermostat in the car 195F. Coolant temp stays about 82C and oil about 80C. The spf radiator is so huge the thermstat barely has to be open to get the required cooling.
