I just replaced my new Canton, on it's way back to Sumit, with an Aviad. Yes it was a lot more money and I'm damn glad I spent the difference. The older Canton's were better, and I have one of those as well but the Aviad is a step up. The problem with the new Canton was not the welding they did on the pan, which was excellent, it was the ceap core from china that didn't have a proper stamping around the main cap.

(I just replied to a PM and this is what I wrote him. I feel it's very important.
He wrote about some of the dip stick tube and other bungs that he either had to do some work or buy some plugs to get it on the block)
Anyway, I've only had experience with the Canton but, the other company's have issues as well.
I would think with company's such as Aviaid, Canton ect. that all of the semi-problem areas like the dip stick tube, windage tray that's already cut out for the dip stick ect...... would be done as part of engineering of such high priced products. This kind of crap really gets to me
I know if I owned one of these company's, a pan would not leave my shop with this lack of easy,.... detail. With my Canton, I had to chop the hell out of the front left corner of the screen in the tray for the stick to contact the oil, even then, the stick broke. They should have a pre-cut hole with a ring that the tube fits into, that way it's a small hole, taking full advantage of the screen. The dip stick tube they sent me, I had to remove some metal to make it fit into the pan hole, and even then it wasn't great.
As far as I see it, it should have been already pressed in from them. When you order a pan and tell them what engine you have and what you want them to supply, like a dip stick, oil pressure line ect.....or if you just need them to plug some of the holes, that it should be ready to install !
NO EXCUSES.
I'm not going to spend $400-$500 on a pan that I have to modify anything.
Maybe we need the Kirkhams to build oil pans as well. You know they would built it correctly.
I really need to chat with them about these issues.
I may also call Aviaid.
Don't tell me I'm the only one that feels this way ?

The Aviaid pan is the nicest oil pan I have ever used.
it is worth the delta in $- it is up to a standard, and not *down to a price*
canton makes a good pan as well, but I have seen way too many of their FE pans with cracked welds.
The canton Windsor pans are nice though, I run their copy of the boss 302 pan on my SPF.
I agree with the assertion on oil temp as well , you can over-cool your oil, and generate undue wear.

I haven't had any weld problems with my Canton but, it was made before 2004.
Yep, no oil cooler for me since I don't race it full time.

By looking at the Aviaid website, he sells two pans for the Cobra FE.
The 9 qt. is actually 1/2" shallower than the 6 qt. for ground clearance. So, why not use the 9 qt. if the 18" in length is not a issue ?
(Guess I need to check the length for my Lone Star, it's not here with me to check right now)
The dipstick tube mounts on the right side, not the left like with my old motor and Canton pan. Is this a issue ?

This seems like essentially the same dimensions as the Canton 15-820 RR pan. Looks like the Aviaid is 1/2" narrower and 1/2" deeper and holds 6 quarts instead of 7, like the Canton.
So if you are changing from the Canton street/strip to the RR pan, would you go with the Canton or the Aviaid. I like the Aviaid because it was the original manufacturer, although the big Aviaid was the original style pan. But I like that the Canton is 1/2" less deep, holds 1 qt more and costs less.
Opinions?

I do like the shallower Canton, as I scuffed the pan just a little, on a ridiculous too high speed bump. Thankfully, no damage, but scary.
The Canton does not come with accessories. If you buy the complete RR kit, it's around $525.
The Aviaid comes complete with accessories for $650.
Being original, doesn't really mean much to me, because you can't see it anyway.
$125 less for the Canton, the way I see it. So, what makes the Aviaid worth the extra ?

I spend hours and hours beating on Canton pans to get them to clear everything--the Aviaid goes right on.
Plus the fact that I am very loyal to them even tho all the old personnel are gone--I have been involved with the original guys ( Tom Davis and Rodney) developing several things, including the first dry sump system for the Donovan 417 which was an alum tapered pan with a front cam driven 3 stage drysump pump that then also drove the fuel pump. Also did some of the work building parts for the turbo scav pumps for the Offy indy car engines.

I haven't had any problem with my last Canton fitting. I bought the stud kit and the pan attached without any issues. Like I mentioned, it was a problem with the screen and dipstick tube.

Canton RR pan is $275 on Summit + $70 for windage tray + $40 for pick-up + $19 for dipstick + $15 for extra gasket = $419. So a bigger difference than you'd think if you just use the Canton site for pricing.

I don't see how the screen interferes with the dipstick or tube since it attaches to the pan on the kickout. What am I missing?

Well, if the color of the Canton pan is that awful looking gold, then you have to add some extra money to anodize or powdercoat the pretty silver color like the Aviaid pan.
The Aviaid pan looks beefier to me, but "I'm no expert."

I failed to look at Summit's site for Canton products. Thanks.
I don't know exactly how the stick broke. When I take the pan off, I'll look into it. It could be, that with the stick having etched marks for the oil level, it could have snapped off there.

Is the aviaid pan steel or alloy? Canton makes an alloy pan that looks similar to the aviaid.

Silverline is incorrect. - the AVIAID pan is aluminum and very light weight. this is the same as RodKnocks car.
FE specialties uses them a lot, I have one on my 428, and I have not seen a steel one.
