OIL PANS-Aviaid, Canton, Moroso ect. ?
I have a Canton oil pan on the engine I just sold. For the new motor, I'm researching the different brands. Aviaid, Canton, Moroso ect....
Aviaid is the most expensive but holds 9 qts.
Who's do you have and why do you like it ?
What accessories ?
How do you like the dip stick location ?
Design of trap doors, windage tray, road race, strip, ect.... ?

That's 520 big ones. Why do you like it ?
With the hinged doors, if you have sludge, (God forbid) won't the door get stuck ? (hopefully not in the closed position)

I have an Aviaid pan, like the original CSX's, but I've heard positive comments about the Armando pans.

That's also $500 w/o accessories. What makes it better ?
Canton- $360 + $90 for windage tray, and other extras.
Keith-Canton Road Race $340 (includes dipstick, 3/4" pickup, an oil temperature fitting, and magnetic drain plug)

I am not to sure a 9 quart oil pan is advantegeous unless heavy track use. The reason is simple a 5 quart oil pan take half the time to get the oil warm. The quicker the oil gets up to temperature the less wear your engine has.

Big problem with the Aviad pan on CSX cars is you have to pull the engine to pull the pan. Don't have to do that with the Canton pan.

I have an Armando pan on my 289FIA. I like it. He was quick and the product is quite nice. I'd buy from him again.
I think his web site changed. Anyone have his link?

Sludge???? How old are you? You must be old enough to remember the old NON-detergent oils. I'm under the impression with the (newer) detergent oils, changed "hot", at reasonable intervals that sludge is no longer the problem it used to be.
Any experts out there?

I disagree.
My buddy has a mechanic business, works on daily drivers, builds performance engines, and several sprint car motors. He's seen it all. Some are just bad maintenance but, even where people have changed the oil religiously, some have sludge. Some racing oils don't have detergents.
Is it the brand ?
Has the oil got too hot, to many times ?
Extreme conditions ?
I don't have the answers, but it happens.

T oil pan in a cobra
FUNFER2 Kevin here is my thinking, the road in my state SUCK!!! The higher I can have the oil pan, the less chance of damage or hitting a pothole and denting the pan. T pan also carries almost the same amount of oil asd a deep pan. I have been running a Canton for 14 years, no problems with leaks. I only problem I had was with the canton diamond scraper and it hitting rod bolts. I cut the straps and added 1" to clear the rotating assembly. No other problems. I also over fill the oil pan by 1.5 quarts of oil. This is because of autocross and roadracing. With the 3 quart accusump I could get away with not over filling the motor. NO damage has been done , SO I don't mess with it. The rule about leaving a sleeping dog alone works for me. No oil to that motor running will kill it faster than any other problems.
As far as sludge buildup in motors, Yes I have seen many cases in the dealership. Diesels are the worst. The oil is being burnt or cooked inside. Not changing oil, even Mobil 1 will sludge if oil changes are done every 7-8000 miles. We have a saleman that runs the car directly to the oil life in the car. The car comes in 2 quarts of oil low and it is cooked. He is looking for a free motor. This one is knocking. car has 92,000 miles on it. 100,000 mile warrantty on the car and he has the dealership in a bind because of the conflict between owners manual and dealership reccomendations of every 3 k miles for an oil change. Too early to tell who is going to win this one. Oil pan, biggest you can fit and still have max ground clearance. Rick L.

David and Jon at Aviaid are working on a pan for the 4.6 that will be above the bell housing. It was tailored to fit the Emerson car but should fit a lot of others as well. Bill E

Hey Ricky- If someone made the "T" pan even wider,..... it could hold 10 qts.
Two problems I had with the Canton.
The dip stick bug and factory tube did not work well. I had to use emery cloth where the tube went into the pan, so it would fit. Even that didn't work to well.
With the windage tray, I cut out a fairly large square for the dip stick to get into the oil. I made sure,...... to cut enough out so their wouldn't be a problem. I'm always checking the level, kinda ANAL....about that. The last time I checked, I carefully inserted the stick, and it broke off ! Don't know why. I pulled the pan and did not see where or how it happened ?
The other problem was lower oil pressure after getting on the go pedal. (I have a high volume pump) Starting out, most of the time with driving, it stayed around 70-90, once it warmed up it would be around 30-40. After getting on it, it would drop to 25. Although that''s not a bad number, it's just that I did not like it.
When you road race with your Canton, how does your pressure react ?

Go with the Aviaid, I have had one now for six years , 1st on a 390 then on 428 works great and I have never had a oil pressure loss on hard starts or stops. Its very well made and was worth the price.
