Default Expansion tank cap problem! What are you guys using?

Ok

What are you guys using for your expansion tank fill caps? I have an early T-Bird tank (rad inlet and fill port on the passenger side) and ordered this cap from Obsolete ford parts:

They said this is what is used for the expansion tank for my tank.

But, low and behold, after waiting 2 weeks for a back order to be delivered. It leaks!

$24 cap and it leaks. The box says made in USA by www.amkproducts.com part number ARC-62C with the reference of 1961-66 chrome radiator cap 1962-66 Fairlane, 1962-66 Ford C2SZ-8100-A

Yes/No?

I'm using the 14# cap from NAPA. Nothing fancy about it. Works fine.

It's nothing special, you should be able to obtain it from a number of early Ford or Shelby parts suppliers. If the cap is leaking it is likely a problem with the seal on the cap or something with the tank itself.

Call Gregg Donahue at Donahue Collector Cars in FL . He has them in stock ... I believe they are 12 psi . Mine is chrome . They aren`t NOS , but a very good repop . 352-344-4329 .

Any 13# cap for early Ford application such as early Mustang works fine. Check with any of the Mustang restoration places and suppliers, easy to locate..

I've had problems with the quality of AMK parts over the years. Starter solenoids have been particularly dodgy. I'd buy a cheapo parts store cap to test and see if it's the cap or the coolant tank. If it's the cap, send it back for a replacement. JMHO.

Another thought might be to have the fill neck area looked @ by a radiator repair shop. They have a tool that rolls the edges and contacts the 2 seats the cap seals against.

I know you do not want any short cuts but here is a trick that might get you to the shop to get her fixed. The rubber gasket on the base of your rad cap is held in place by pressure from a large washer with a rivet clamping it in place. Steal the rubber gasket from your old cap and then put it on your new cap to double the thickness of the seal area. It worked for me until I could get a more permanent fix completed.

To keep this 65 original you can not use the Motorcraft because it did not come on the market till about 1972. You will want a Autolite radiator cap and the Mustang restoration guys should have the correct ones.
