80# at 2.0 inches??? where did you come up with that spec?

This should be the last of the post mortem stuff and it should start going back together tomorrow. This first pic is of the cam and as I had hoped only the one lobe was damaged and I still don’t see marks on anything other than the lobe.


The second is just a closer view of the lobe and you can see how little of the lobe was damaged.


The last pic is the filter element after its draining and removal. This filter was put on the car when it had about 1 hour of running on it and it has run for an additional 4 since then. There’s really not much to see; there are some tiny metallic pieces in it but judging from their reaction, or should I say non-reaction, to a magnet I’d say that nearly all of them are non-ferrous. Would what you guys see here be a problem or just stuff getting shed off a new build?

Steve,
all makes sense, seen it all before, the intake ,being the heavier valve will always bounce first.
Don't condemn the cam just yet, as it's a steel roller those marks will probably polish out and again, being a roller will survive even if some remain.

You can get the cam reground if necessary--

On the keepers pulling thru the retainer---I don't know your valve sizes but I have had heads brought to me where some had pulled thru and they had like a 3/8 retainer on a 11/32 valve---

I think stock ford specs back in 60s was 95 lbs at 1.82 inches---I won't debate your machinists specs but thats not numbers that I would use--

This is a roller cam, not stock spec.

I'd wager that the nut made a brief stop in between spring coils on it's way through. Put that deal into bind and pushed the keeper through the retainer. Other than that I think you're getting away lucky considering the possibilities that were there for greater carnage.

Barry, when it comes right down to it, I'll take luck any day!

Mike/Jerry/Barry, when I saw those maks in the cam I never gave a thought to saving it but this is my first billet roller as well. How would one save something like that?

You can buy what I and others call a n Arkansaw stone--its a sharpening stone from like Lowes, Home depot etc---about 3 in long 1/2 thick, 1 inch wide---different grits are available

Dress the lobe down carefully to see if it comes back---if not, contact the cam manufacture and return it for regrinding--lobe base circle will be a few thou less--also good time to change cam specs and have whole stick reground

Mr mike Huddart----If your referring to my post about fords stock spec----I want to know IF you read that the machinist used 80 lbs at 2.0 inches---wonder why there was valve train problems??? the roller would fly off the nose of the cam lobe and crash back down onto it followed by rattling around on the seat---when I have seen this conditions, the valve seats also will show abnormal wear--
