Well, just add my post to the "Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda" Department. This is a prime reason why you should always stuff an old rag into every open hole before you work. The law of probability states that a nut, bolt, washer or any other foreign object, when dropped, will always end up in the most inaccessible and inhospitable place it can find. Been there and done that more times than I care to admit to.

Zaactly,learned that lesson a long time ago when putting an engine together. Luckily,it was still on the engine stand,had to turn (rotate) the whole engine on the stand a few times to make it fall in the oil pan to get it out....
Since then, I ALWAYS stuff a clean shop rag in every hole possible.....

I love being a hero and dreaming up a way to solve problems this.................. on someone else's car. That's kind of a fun challenge.
When it happens to mine I start to overload, shut down, not think straight, can't find anything, drop and break more stuff, analysis paralysis etc.
A beer or two and a good nights sleep makes it a whole different deal.
Go get that lottery ticket!

A little tip---never use stainless hardware on the top of the engine--if you drop a stainless nut, etc down a hole you can not get it out with a magnet--this means those SS nuts and washers for bolting down the carbs, dist holddown, etc

Great tip Jerry, I sure many folks never consider that type of thing when building the engine. One thing I did when putting my car together was future maintenance, getting at things...basically forethought.

I installed a pair of headers in my 351 (5.8) Bronco and my best friend was helping me, he dropped a socket inside the down "Y" pipe into the cat, we could never recover it I am sure it isstill there. But that was some hole in one so to speak. Hey kaka happens. I would use a magnet or you might try a rat tail video camera (obviously no oil in the pan) and see what you can get.
