Default Carb Interference with Distributor

I have a 427 HR with the 2x4 C4AE-9425-F intake, and the msd 8595 distributor. Right now there is a 1/2 offset spacer on both carbs, spacing the front carb back, and the rear carb back. This makes for a tight firewall. I can remove the offset back spacer and put a straight 1/2 spacer to match the front, but what I really want is to get rid of the offset spacers all together. I haven't been able to find a lower cap, or a crab cap for the msd. Any suggestions? I have tried a 1" spacer, but from the looks, I would need 2" to clear the distributor with the front bowl, and I don't have nearly the room for that....

Thanks in advance,

Jim

1850's. A Mallory Unilite clears them. 1" spacers will not fit under an ERA hood.

the HR intake and 4160 carbs should clear a standard dist. cap without issues.
thats if you run them without secondary metering blocks. the dist, has to have the small cap, no hei, or large motorcraft caps.
so with that being said post a pic of what you have and i can advise on whats happening.

note the type of float bowls you must use.

your plug wires will touch the bowl but it will clear if you have the right carbs.

Do you have them turned around? They should be mounted on the manifold with the "front" of the carb facing to the rear...

Here are a few pics. You can see the offset spacer, and the lack of room between the distributor and the front carb. I have removed the offset spacer from the rear carb.

its the carbs, i would contact barry at survival motorsports and get a set of the correct carbs. you could loose the offset spacer, and would probably run a whole lot better in the end. the linkage is fine that can be re-used.
they have a web site and you can see the carb set up

look at the pic i posted, see the main body difference, The MR and HR will use the same carbs. where you live you would do fine without chokes also.....

also with the non-adjustable floats you will be plagued with drivability issues. those are not for dual 4 's......sell them to help with the new carb purchase they both look like they have the auto trans kickdown bracket on them. and both have chokes, you need a set of carbs to work as a 2x4 with the secondary diaphrams connected

Thanks for the help! I was wondering why I didn't have adjustable floats.... I will run it with 1 offset and 1 1/2" spacer until the money tree in the back yard grows enough to afford carbs.. come on rain!!

Hey Jim,

I was noticing in your pic above that there is a lot of black soot in your carb throats, especially the front one. Given that you are messing with the distributor and timing, have you had any backfires? Have you confirmed the timing values? How do your plugs look?

prolly not worth worrying about the soot yet....may be from using the offset spacers with carbs not really for dual 4's.....would bet the plugs are black too.

Looking at those pics - is that a 1964 high riser - as in "real 427 high riser" intake? If so its a pretty unique piece and has a very different setup than the medium risers - valve cover angle, ports, carb spacing are all different. It mght be pretty tough to get anything other than a factory distributor to fit in there.

My custom carbs would certainly run and link up better than the Summit Racing discount 600s on there now, but they will have the identical bowl clearance - fixing all the issues except the one he is trying to fix.

Yes it's a real HR intake (C4AE-9425-F). I know the carbs are not what I need, but until after Christmas, they are what I have.... I have been doing research to find out exactly what # Holley's came on the HR originally, but have found differing answers... I just want to get rid of the offset spacers...

Go to this link and download the catalog (click on pdf icon in top center of page). Your high riser carb part #s are shown on page 32 in the bottom chart. Lots of good info in that and the other catalogs about your engine and how to tune it.
