Drilling sideoiler passages
I have two 427 engines that have the bosses cast into the block for the side-oiling system, but they are drilled as center-oilers. Is there a shop out there that can drill the passages out and convert them to sideoilers? If so, how much would this cost?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Why? There is no performance advantage.

In How to Rebuild Big-Block Ford Engines, Steve Christ says: "Early 427s use the same oiling system as the 390HP. This system feeds oil to the front main bearing, camshaft and rocker shafts before the remaining main bearings. This means that an oil-pressure loss anywhere in the lubrication system starves one or all of the the four rear main bearings." This is the so-called top-oiler or center-oiler block. In part, with regard to the sideoiler, he says: "This system ensures that the main - and cam-bearing bores receive oil pressure directly from the oil pump." "If you want the best block for high performance use, the side-oiler is it."
I've got a top-oiler and am generally happy with it; however, the passage above dove-tails pretty well with what I've heard in the past, which is that the side-oiler has a better oil delivery system, and, because of that, it is viewed as a better endurance engine.

I have done what you are talking about. I see you're a flatlander I'm just up in NH so we could arrange a look see if you're interested. I used Grover gundrilling out of Maine and could get you his number. It cost about $600. The angle of the holes needs to be spot on to avoid breaking through to the crank case inner. If you want measurements or to swap ideas let me know.
Rick I would be very interested in the article mentioned if I could arrange a copy of it that would be helpful I'm sure. Fax # 603-745-8897

Great - Thanks for the input!
Rick: I'll see if I can find a copy of that magazine - if not I'll take you up on the fax copy.
Nick: I'll be in touch to ask more about your experiences. It's good to know there is an experienced machine shop relatively close.
Thanks again

Rick that would be great, no hurry I'm on vaca this week in Florida so I'm just checking out where EM and Finish Line are. I've met Charlie and Dan, a couple of the ERA boys, at NHIS. Always good to put a face with a name especially one to talk Cobra with. Hopefully see you at the next one,
Cheers Nick
