Default FE 427 Side Oiler on E-Bay

Hi folks:
I saw this engine on e-bay see link(Ford Cobra, Mustang 427 side oiler dual carbs | eBay).
Before I spend $17K on a spare engine I would like to kick this around with those who are more well versed than me.
Any thoughts or comments on this engine? Your input will be greatly appreciated.
Would you buy this engine and if so do you think the price is reasonable?
Tks

Here is my opinion; I would never buy somebody's rebuild unless I knew the guy that rebuilt the engine. Paying $17k for an unknown is a lot of money that you could waste. Getting it home and finding 3 months later that the crank had been turned 40/40, the block overbored beyond safe limits, the heads milled .06", and various other cheap parts used could result in you having a big pile of scrap.

Over the years I have bought my fair share of good deals. Lucky for me it was individual parts that I was able to fix. Some of the stuff people do just amaze me. Heck, my buddy bought a crate engine some years ago and pulled the heads. All the pistons were in backwards...and this was an engine right from Mopar Performance!

I agree. Take your 17k and have someone build what you want, so you know exactly what is in the engine. Unless the price is too good to pass up (17k is no bargain), its not worth the risk.

The seller is the owner of "Kevin's Klassics" here in Minnesota. The shop is known for it's Boss 302 and Boss 429 projects that routinely set the bar at the BJ auctions. Kevin doesn't deal in junk. I don't know him personally but his reputation in the car business is solid.

Thank you so much fellows, I tend to agree that buying someone else's "problems" could become huge expensive problems for me. I am leaning towards getting it done to my specs. I m even toying with the idea of converting a nice new side oiler into a cammer, but that is way to expensive now... $40K range.
Thanks so much for your insight
Sincerely
