Default 427 fe

does anybody know what the going price is for a 427 fe side oiler is. comes with everything stock and everything has been dip and cleaned and inspected by a machine shop. has about 200 mile on rebuild. has an edelbrock 2*4 intake, le mans rods, steel crank, adjustable rocker arm assembley, hyderaulic roller lifters and cam, cobra valve covers, plus all the misc. stuff like water pump and timing chain and cover and all the accessories. He is asking 7k for everything. not sure if this is a good deal.

There could be as much as a $10k swing on these engines, depending on several variables, the reputation and knowledge of the builder being one of the biggest. You need a lot more details for an accurate estimate, such as production or service block? True side oiler or drilled? Previous marine engine? Cylinders bored? Line bored? Sonic tested? Crank magnafluxed? What brand of rockers? Which heads (a big one)? Which carbs? Compression (able to run nasty pump gas)? Etc etc etc.

Warning, lots of scammers scarf up junk piece-meal off eBay, package it all together and try and say they have an "awesome race-built 427 side oiler for Cobra..." Don't be fooled. Takes a lot more than the words "side oiler" to be of any value.

Elmariachi is right on...7k sounds very fishy to me though. A standard bore side oiler block that has not had major surgery can fetch 4k+ on its own.

cobrabritt83 It is POSSIBLE you found a barn find, NOT likely. If this motor is complete, it's a steal. If the guy want to sell it with a check out from a machine shop of YOUR choising that would be fine. Tell the owner you will pay 50% up front and the rest on inspection. You will have to eat the shop fee's either way. You could still come out way ahead if it checks out. Like to hear the owners story about why, how, and what the reasons are for selling it. Make sure that the block is pressure tested to 100 psi for couple of hours. Be careful, hope the deal works out. Goto FE forum and bring up the guy's name, somebody may know something more about this. Sorry, a sweet deal is very rare these days. Rick L. Ps a good SO motor complete is about 10K with a .030" over block, no sleves, more if stock bore.

Price sounds about right but be wary of the 200 mile claim. If it indeed has been run but very little, then look for the reason why. With hydraulic lifters, it's likely a service block and those were wrought with issues from the factory. Examine the block, cylinder heads, and intake for casting flaws or evidence of water leaking into the engine.

the guy who is selling it is a local guy who builds cobras and hot rods. He is a preferred builder for FFR, he's been in business for a long time and he has no problem with me taking it to any machine shop to verify what he is selling it as. I just dont have any clue what these engines go for.
