Default 427 FE Found. Thoughts on Condition??

This block appears to me to be in good condition except for the expected surface rust. You guys see anything I don't?

I'm considering an immediate purchase.

Chris- Seems to be the real deal. Spacing between bores makes me think it is std bore. You could bore it up to .030 if needed. Check the bottom of the cylinders to see if it has ever been sleeved. (I can't tell much from the pictures.) Personally, I'd be hot on this one if you feel comfortable building the engine. Otherwise, take a builder with you AND take the cash. Bill. Good luck.

Check the bore size and only buy on condition it passes sonic wall testing. If you own it have machinist check every dimension, especially for wedge in the decks and line bore.

This motor is actually overseas. I'm a bit leary but the pics do look good. The price seems fair but not overly high or low. I'm going to get some better closeups and then make a decision. I'll update the board with what I do.

Oh, my Lord, NO. Assuming you are not comfortable just "rolling the dice" with the understanding that they could come up snake eyes and you'll be SOL, I suggest you offer to escrow the money with a local-to-him lawyer/barrister/etc. pending a look-see by your local machinist. The escrow fee should be less than the cost to ship the block here. I would not just "send him the money on faith."

If you buy anything by looking at pictures, I want you as a customer. Listen to Patrick-for your own self-respect. A diligent search will reveal safer sideoilers closer to Tulsa than 'overseas'.

Yeah thats what I'm thinking. There are more out there. THis guy is actually in UK and wants 120pounds to ship to US... about 180 dollars.
I like Patrick's idea of the escrow being shipping cost and then a ultrasonic wall measurement and hydrostat pressure test passsage for full payment.

But the real question is "WHY?". There are others closer to Tulsa.

I don't know anything about this block, other than what has been written on the listing. ORIGINAL 1968 FORD 427 SIDE-OILER BLOCK...FOR COBRA...NASCAR SOHC GALAXY..GASSER | eBay But at least he's on our side of the pond.

I saw that one too. I gave it a once-over.

Speaking of Pond, I'd rather have one of his blocks or a new 427SO than that thing. It has 2 sleeves and then there's the rod story. This scares me:

That's understandable. A lot of the vintage SO blocks that are out there are going to have some issues. Unless you have your heart set on a SO, you might want to consider a nice 428 block. They're much easier to find, and you can build them to make the same power -- more than you'll ever need. And in a Cobra, you can't see the difference unless the car's on a lift.

Are you looking for just a block or a complete unassembled 427 SO? I have a complete motor I was collecting for a potential Kirkham build. Orig block (not a service block) std bore. NIB Edelbrock big chamber heads, Edel F427 manifold, MDS billet dist, SA true roller cam, NIB Eagle cast 3.98 stroker crank, reconditioned C6AE C rods with new ARP bolts, PRW alum roller rockers, PRW polished water pump, Morrels roller lifters, Comp cams hyd roller, Shelby timing cover, Shelby alum oil pan, Moroso windage tray and pick up, Ford Racing polished Cobra Lemans valve covers, Tony Banda oval cobra air cleaner with K&N filter, Alum billet pulleys and brkts, Preformance Engineering dampner, mellings blueprinted oil pump, all ARP bolts, Alum flywheel, etc. Need to get block machine work and pistons. Was to be a 5800 RPM cruiser. I'm sure I'm missing parts on listing. $9000 for everything. All NIB except flywheel. Let me know if interested.

Let me take a look closer at some of the componentns on that list and get back with you. Is the block in good shape? No sleeves or other BS?

block is std bore if I remember correctly. I think there are no sleeves either, don't remember. Had block pressure tested and sonic tested. Both were ok. I'm sure I missed some of the parts when I listed them. Billet oil filter mount, billet oil pum drive. billet dist hold down, polished s/s 12 point manifold bolts, other polished s/s bolts, arp pressure plate bolts, etc.

Well, let me throw this out there! I have out of my X 1968 GTE Cougar a 427 SO drilled for hyd lifters from the factory which I ran a Crane solid lifter in. This engine still has the factory cross hatch and ready to go back togather. Original bumper pistons and nodular crank and rods, stock heads, adjustable rockers. Don't know if I have the cam which would probably need to be upgraded anyway, sidewinder intake manifold and assorted nuts bolts and covers to assemble engine, windage tray, excuse my rambling as I think of things! I also have 2 sets of new .015 steel shim head gaskets, have been thinking of doing a 482 aluminum from one of the venders on here, so I really haven't set a price or even thought about it, but can be available.

The W code 1968 427 engines had hydraulic lifters, iron crank and buldges on pistons.
It was the last side oiler engine offered by Ford and only with a C6 automatic. All other 427 production engines were four speeds.

Stock, it was the lowest power 427 at 390 HP vs. 410 for a 1963 1/2 single 4v center oiler.

I had a GT-E Cougar 427 and saw one fine example sell for $165,000 Barrett-Jackson. There were only 357 made in 1968 only. 256 were XR-7 models and 101 were standard Cougars without a tachometer.

Probably more than you wanted to know, too.

Chris, I notice you're in Tulsa, I am too. I'm looking for a FE block too. 427 SO would be nice for me, but I'll use another FE block if I don't come up with a SO. I left a 105 mirror block with my engine builder, but just found out he said "no go", so I'm still looking. I wouldn't want to steal your post or jump in front of you, but if you're not interested in what WildBill1965 posted above, I might follow up with more questions for him.

Maybe we can compare notes some time.

Hi Joe - If you're interested, go for it. I am still so early in my process and learning so you're more than welcome to it. I sent BBQ a note saying that I was going to pass for the time being.

I'd love to get together sometime and compare notes. I am just starting out with my cobra research and hope to start gathering materials and have a roller ordered in q1 next year. Right now, I've rested on either a 428cj or a 427so. I think the 428 solves my problems and is a bit more budget friendly. I'm thinking about taking a trip to Kraft Engines in Arkadelphia just for a day trip and maybe going with them on my FE project. It's been so hot lately I havens had the chance to get out to the garage but I have a bunch of stuff I'm going to work on and get traded or sold for my new project. Wife said last night that a garage ac was "about #110 on the list of S@*T we need". Hmm.
