427 Side oiler hydraulic lifters?
Just getting a 1965 side oiler. It has always had solid roller lifter cam. I want to install a hydraulic roller. I have heard that the side oilers are not drilled to allow sufficient oil flow to feed hydraulic lifters. Some say that later ones were drilled and early ones were not. I don't know where to look on the block or ?? to see if mine is drilled to allow hydraulics. HELP please

Why don't you want to run solid lifters. I have been using them for over ten years in my FE 427 and aside from an ocassional adjustment they have never caused me any problems. But, that being said I understand the desire for roller rockers.

It is not that I don't want to run solids but mine are roller solid lifters and many people seem to have trouble with the needle bearings in the roller failing and dropping all the debris into the engine with drastic results. I am looking into the new Isky roller lifter that uses a roller instead of needle bearing but don't know if they make them for FE's. If they don't I will be going to a hydraulic roller and less spring pressure. Other option is to convert to a standard solid lifter cam, as you are running but really like roller lifter cams because of their larger area under the curve for better performance on the street.

c6rodder,
Crower makes this solid roller lifter EnduraMax Roller Lifters Ford 390-427 FE 63-UP for the FE. It doesn't use needle bearings.
I'm running the same lifter, but mine use needle bearings. In the future I'll probably remove my lifters and send them to Crower to be re-built with the NBO (needleless bearing option).

the galleys appear to be there, if they are drilled you will have 3 plugs around the cam in the rear of the motor........
enjoy

1968 was only year for factory hydraulic lifters. W code GT-E Cougars were only cars to get this engine. I think the service blocks have this, too. Check with Royce Peterson on Mercurycougar.net - The Front Page and he will astound you with all things FE.

The three plugs on the back are the ticket to it being drilled for hydraulic. As Fred says it looks like they are all set. Your answers with pics are all here oil
You need a good book with some diagrams and oiling tricks for FE's. Check on Barry Robotniks or Steve Christs books on the subject.

side oiler hydraulic lifters
Thank you for all the suggestions and photos. I will purchase a book on the FE's to learn enough to not do something stupid.

it's a 428 out of a '67 "Q" code stationwagon. But it has the bosses for crossbolting and the heavy webbing. I have been told the reversed S on the back of the block is the rares of the 428 block.

the "S" is unusual, usually an "A" in passenger cars, does it have a casting of C6ME-A?
the date code will tell more......
