My point was that Chas is always ragging on me for my 14,000+ posts, most of which is miscellaneous drivel. You really just have to ignore Chas. He irritates everybody, but he does so with no real malice, just crustiness.

Default FE aluminum block oil pressure

I took the cobra out again and warmed to operating temperature. Oil pressure was around 20 lbs at 1100 rpms and responded quickly to rpim increases. 40 to 50 lbs between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm, up to 60 quickly at 3,000+. 60 lbs plus at anything approaching 4 to 4500 rpm. Spoke with Keith Craft and he assures me this is the tendency with the aluminum blocks he builds. If there are any problems he will take care of it. I have every confidence in Keith since I have had two other engines from him and they have performed flawlessly. Also, have two other friends with engines built by Keith and have had no issues with those engines either.
I appreciate everyone's input. Always intersting to see the wide variety of knowledge available on club cobra.

Default FE aluminum block oil pressure

Took the cobra out again yesterday and warmed to operating temp. Oil pressure response quickly with any increase in rpm's. 35 to 40 lbs at 2,000 rpm, 45 to 50 quickly at 3,000 + and 60 lbs to 70 at 4500 and up.
Keith Craft explained this was typical for his aluminum block builds. If there are any issues he will take care of it. I have every confidence in Keith. I have had two other engines he built with no problems and very good performance.
Also, two friends he has built engines for with the same good reviews.
Thanks for all the information. Very impressive the wide variety of advice available on club cobra. Much appreciated.

Since aluminum grows more than iron, to have the same hot idle pressure, an aluminum motor will need to have tighter main bearing clearance when cold. The tighter main clearance can reduce oiling to the rods until proper temperature is reached. It's not uncommon to build aluminum blocks to have a little more clearance on the main bearings. This prevents then end user from kicking the rods out when he stands on a cold motor. As long as pressure comes up on throttle, all is well. Every aluminum race engines I've owned was built this way.

A book I have on the 4.6 ltr modular said the main clearance on the aluminum block is under 0.001" when the temp is below zero. (This is based on my memory of reading the book). The author made a fairly big point that owners need to be very careful keeping the rpm down until the engine warms up.

I'm sure the bearing gap increases with temp on both the mains and the cam. No doubt in my mind that an aluminum engine would see a greater drop off in oil pressure, when warm, than an otherwise identical iron engine.

I set aluminum block main bearing clearances pretty tight on FE's...usually around .0018"-.0020". Taking into account that the clearances open up anywhere from .00075-.001".

Rod bearing clearances are the same as an iron block. Cam bearings get the green loctite treatment.

Lash also grows a lot more with an all-aluminum combo. Iron blocks with aluminum heads get .006" tighter lash when cold as a starting point. All aluminum engines get .010" tighter.

that same book says the mains grow .002".
