FE intake gaskets

Looking for gaskets for weber intake to E'brock heads on my 427 BB. Heads have been milled slightly to bump up comp to 10:1, intake ports had been opened to 2.5" x 1.4" before I got it, so std fel-pro 1247's don't work, plus they need to be thicker due to the head milling.
The 1247S-3's ports aren't big enough, but the 1246 428 gaskets have bigger ports and might work, but neither are thick enough. While searching for gaskets I saw that several sites stated that the fel-pros were avalable in thickness' from .060 to .120 ", Has anyone found this to be true ? Looking for recommendations , any help on this.
Thanks
Ted

Give Keith Craft a call. He has custom Cometic gaskets for his ported heads. Not sure how thick they are though

Ted--------if your heads have been milled to raise compression, it should actually take thinner gaskets fot the proper geometry to line up wth the ports and bolt holes---

Also, make sure the manifold isn't setting on the block end cross rails holding it up making it impossible to get a correct fitting--------

Thanks for the info guys, I'll have to call around come monday.
Jerry: Re: gasket thickness, I think when I put this together and consulting with Barry R, we had determined that the intake had been milled sometime in the past. I just spent a couple of hours checking intake for warpage and angles. There is a slight warp front to back and all ports check good, nothing out more than .5deg.
Then I set it back in place without bolts. Intake v/c rails are below head rails. Then I installed bolts (loose) and shimed at front and rear intake to head surface until bolt holes in intake were close to being centered to head holes. This worked out to .090" shims between intake and heads. Dist was in place, and .130" clearance on front & rear rails. So according to my logic, I need gaskets .090" thick + whatever amount of crush is required for the type of gasket I end up with.
Am I thinking correctly?
Ted

ps: the BT double thick I had in there are @.130" total.

I keep trimmable Blue Thunder gaskets in .060 and .120. Stuff has the consistency of floor tile - very durable.

MOTORHEAD 10-21-2013 07:20 AM

Barry: The BT doubles are what I had in there. They measure .145" . I think they were too thick. Is the .120 that you mention a single thickness or the double?
As mentioned above, the manifold fits perfectly with .090" shims between heads and intake surface w/no gasket. Jegs web page for the fel-pro racing gaskets states that they are available in thickness' from .090 to .120.
Thinking that a 1246S-3 428CJ might be the way to go, but need to know how much more to add to the .090" for crush.
Any help appreciated. Need to get this thing ready for the Reptile Roundup !

how about 2 1247 glues togeather?

MOTORHEAD Ted what is the thickness of 2 1247 glues togeather? I have done this on a motor with the same problem as you. I don't remember what the new thickness was. We hightaced both sides and let dry for 24 hours. Need 2 guys to install intake. Used studs in the heads and nuts with washers attached. Start in the middle and follow the torque sequence to get manifold nuts to spec. Do this in 5 pound readings. Pain in the butt, but works. If this doesn't work, "O" ring the intake ports and use rubber gasket seals like on LS motors. ONly other Idea is to buy flat steel sheet and make spacers to bolt between the intake and heads with RTV or gaskets. good luck Rick

Rick: thanks for the input, it seems we think alike ! 1247's won't work because my ports are too big: 2.4 x 1.5, because my manifold was on a 428 at one time. I port matched my heads to match the manifold. However 1246S-3's (428) gaskets might do the job since their ports are 2.3 x1.34 and should have enough material to trim before hitting the printoseal, plus the "S" versions have a metal center to prevent distortion. They are .065" thick and I'm going to try to glue them together and see how that will work. Had to order them, will be a week before I get them.
Thanks,
Ted

Put a thick one on one side and a normal one on the other....

not that I have ever done such a thing :)

Jerry Clayton 10-24-2013 01:29 PM

Oh---a side winder type intake system???????????if making left turns, place the double on the right side bank!!!!!!!!

MOTORHEAD 10-24-2013 06:12 PM

Jerry: I like your metal shim idea, may try that !
Barry: now THATS thinking outside the box!
