help identifying a 427 engine
My father-in-law recently rebuilt this 427 that he used to race flat bottom boats with. He claims its a NASCAR block but I want to be sure. I do know its a 427 wedge side oilier.

Need a clean pic of the Block ID (above the oil filter) and clarification on the number on the heads. Can you please spell out the number? (Can't make it out clearly). An "N" on heads could be a '68 427 Galaxie or a '68-'70 428 CJ or SCJ, at least according to my reference materials.

numbers
on the head it looks like c80E and n-0809 on the block there is a number looks like 12 dif and hm s fomoco 69101512. not sure about the ones in that it could be just lines.on the front of the block there is a 56 and 352, dont know what those mean. one thing, this engine is configured for use in a flat bottom boat.

You should find a number on the block that resembles what you have on the heads. It should be like a "C_AE-XXXX-X". Should usually be on the side of the block. The "352" and other numbers are not important.

where?
i have scrutinized the sides of the block as best i can and find no numbers. Is there a particular location on the side?if needed i'll scrape off paint to get to the numbers. I really want to figure out how much this engine is worth. My father-in-law said he thinks it's a '71 but that was all I could get out of him. ford 427 wedge side oilier double-pumper .... something something. at least my chevy is easy to figure out since its bone stock 350 lol.

Let's start simple. Are there cross-bolts for the mains in the side of the block just above the oil pan?

Look on the back of the block, should be some numbers cast on there! Numbers look like ones on 1968 hydrolic engine. Would post a pic but never got it to work.

looks to me like a 427 block, with 428 heads on it. but i have seen guys crossbolt their 390's too so that doesn't clinch it
the date codes will be cast on the block right above the oil filter housing.
the casting number will be on the side of the block towards the front. some later blocks will not have a casting number.
take a pic of the passenger side of the block right above the cross bolts.
we can then tell if its a sideoiler or not.
the rear bulkhead may have some things scratched or cast into the block.
good luck on your mission.....

FWB is right on here. Show us the underside of the block, look for the numbers and also a pic of the back of the block, which may help us tell you if you have a "Juice Cam" (hydraulic)or not. If you are really energetic, when you roll it pull the pan and take some pics of the bottom end. The questions and answers can go on, but this is a start.

A straight-on picture of the front of the engine, aimed at the area to the driver's side of the timing cover will tell you if it's a true S/O or not.

the date reference of 71' and the flat bottom boat reference, has me thinking we will probably be seeing a 71 marine hydraulic block...
time will tell...........

You should also be able to find the numbers just above the oil filter then too. As I said, numbers will look like the ones on the head with the CxAE-xxxx-x, where the x's are the variable numbers that will help us ID the block. Even without the numbers, the pics will help nail it down pretty close.
