Default 427 fe crankshaft

Does scat make a standard stroke crank for a 427 fe? I'm trying to find a 3.78 stroke crank for my 427 but all I find is eagle stuff, which I heard is all junk. I looked at some scat catalogs but all they list is stroker cranks. I also heard a 391 truck crank will work but it will require a lot of machining. Any ideas would be great thanks.

if your using rods with ford journal size, there are plenty of 390 cranks out there to be had....some more info on the rest of the bottom end may yield you more info/options

The 390 has the same stroke as the 427.

The 391 truck has a larger OD on the snout (where the damper goes) and will need turned down. The huge advantage is that these are steel cranks -not cast iron. Now I cannot remember for certain if all 391FT are steel, but most are, if not all.

Unless you have some rules preventing you, why not stroke it out? Cost about the same for a whole rotating assembly either way.

I think a cast 390 crank will work fine, as early 427's had them. They're supposedly stonger than chevy cast cranks, and I heard drag racers sometimes prefer the cast units over the heavier forged ones. If you are going to use a FT crank, you need to turn down the snout, and also shave off some of the thicker flywheel flange, as at one time I was looking for such a crank.

My stock stroke 427, with hi-riser heads and single four makes the same torque as my 472 stroker with medium riser heads and a single four.

Scat does have a race quality forged 427 crank available now - but it is an expensive piece. Less than a billet, but still approaching a couple grand. I've asked for a more "normal" steel crank at around a grand, but it ain't around yet.

Just for the record, 390 cranks are cast steel, not cast iron. The later 427 cranks were of course forged steel.

No one would doubt the benefits of building an engine with a forged steel crankshaft. But for a street engine, I don't think they're worth the extra $$$. I've never heard of someone with a broken FE crank on a street engine.

Unless it's an Eagle crank. Several have been reported here.

I have a forged steel 391 crank with the snout already turned down but the real 427 cranks also have hollowed out throws with plugs in the end and are crossdrilled.
I think the cast cranks are fine to around 600 hp but the steel is good for quite a bit beyond that.
