Default 428 build

My 428 is a relatively mild build with reliability in mind. It started with a rusted block that ended up with 3 sleeves and it is bored .030 over. The block was decked and line bored and fitted with ARP main bolts. The oil passages were blue printed to improve flow through out as this is a weakness of the center oilers. I am running stock rods with ARP bolts that were shot-peened and polished. The crank was turned 0.010 on the mains and rods. I went with Dove F5 heads - a high swirl design and Blue Oval Performance fit stainless valves and did the port work. I think Edelbrock is a better choice today. The compression is about 10.8:1 and to obtain that we had to use Wiseco custom pistons as the stock 428 pistons didn't give us the right compression. I am using the Dove narrow rocker arm setup on hardened shafts without end stands. People tell me that it is a matter of time before they break but because the cam is not extreme, the spring pressures are not excessive and I think it will be OK. The cam is a Crower hydraulic 224 and 228 at .050, I think, with 108 degree lobe centerlines. I gives a good rough idle to sound cool but produces mucho torque, which is what a 428 should do. It isn't a 427 and it shouldn't be cammed like one. On top I have a Blue Thunder med. riser intake with a 750 vac. secondary Holley. On the bottom I have the Canton road race pan. This spring, after 2800 miles on it, I am going to the dyno to get it optimized. So far I am happy with the performance.

What are the plans for your build?

Gary

Default 428 build

Mine too is a fairly mild build. (trying for 450-475HP)
I went with a C6ME block and bored it .030 over had the head surfaces decked to a min. the stock crank teardroped and grinded to .010 on the mains and the rods. And internaly balanced to 0. The stock rods were reconditioned with ARP bolts. Sil-v-lite pistons approx 10-1 compression with edelbrock #6006 heads. Harland sharp Roller rockers with billet end stands & spacers.
Ford SVO pushrods, Edelbrock true roller timing chain set, crane
anti pump up lifters, fel-pro gaskets through out. Port match the intake to the heads. ARP everything! (exept the mains)
Ultradine cam with a duration at .050 intake 221 & exhaust 221 gross valve lift .533 intake and .533 exhaust. A Original '66 FOMOCO 2X4 Med riser intake. cobra 427 alumin. valve covers. That is about it for now but I have a lot planned for it as soon I can save the $$.
Baldwin fuel log, twin Holley 450's (original) Aviad racing oil pan & windage tray, Holley fuel pump, Waiting on ERA 427 S/c!!

Default

I just picked up a C6ME (.040 over) short block with TRW forged pistons and 427 rods. I've begun to take it apart and check clearances, etc. but I am concerned about the used 427 rods. I plan on a mild build using Edelbrock Performer parts with torque in mind (I plan to have Blue Oval build the heads and spec the cam and carb). Gary, when is the Colorado Cobra Club meeting again? - I would like to get together and compare notes. Mike, I forget where you live,

Keith

Default Next meeting

Hi Kieth,

Our next meeting is our holiday party this Saturday, the 8th. Not too late to sign up if you call by Wed. - $35 per person 6:00 at Racine's. 303-979-4977. As for the rods, if they check out when mag. tested they should be OK if you fit them with ARP rod bolts. By the time they are reconditioned, however, for only a little bit more you can get brand new rods that are much stronger - call Rob for pricing. I have my rev. limiter set at 6,000 and this is considered safe for stock rods.

Next club type meeting will be at Mathew's Museum in Arvada in February.

When are you expecting your car?

Gary
