What you see is a K&N 66-0901 X-Stream Top Filter. I painted the black portion with aluminum enamel paint, and then flattened the existing filter base so a new 9" K&N filter would fit flush. The old K&N filter that fits the chrome Stellings and Hellings filter top is E-2570. The filter that fits the new Xtreme top is E-2620. Even with the base modifications to flatten the lip, either filter system can be used.

And when I say "flatten the existing filter base" I am referring to the outside circumference of the existing base. You make small peripheral cuts, on the outside lip, maybe about a half inch between each cut, then just flatten it out. Like this:

There are 9" flat filter bases for about $14 or less at Summit, and you get a paper filter and chrome-ish lid with it.

Is this the base of the S&H? I wonder if it will fit my turkey pan unless these are all the same size because the S&H is 8 1/2 " in diam.

Ok no worries the Turkey pan is 11" wide I just measured it. BY the way I looked at my filter element in the S&H and the foam looks a bit dirty so that might have something to do. I cannot understand why, for it is relatively new.

That right there could be the reason you're running rich.
1. Dirty filter hurting air flow and/or
2. Simply changing to a foam can restrict air flow messing with fuel air ratio.
Did you swap filter like for like?

Yes it is. And the cool thing is that, should you desire, you can swap the S&H back on top of the flattened base with its original filter and it still looks just the same as it always did. But be forewarned, you are going to have to adjust your carb for the new increased flow, so switching back and forth is not really realistic except for a quick show or something.

got it I figured I had to readjust the carb for the new air flow.

Lou, you might enjoy doing a little experiment. Measure your secondary opening rate with a zip tie before you change out the filter. Then run the car with the new Xtreme filter and you'll find the secondaries no longer open. Here is my thread on that and me putting on the cool QF Adjustable Secondary Housing. Turkey Pan on 427 S/O
My 489 aluminum Tunnelport would not run with the turkey pan. Talked to Wally Peet at Pomona for the Cobra 50th anniversary and he confirmed that at low rpm the carb draws more air from the sides instead of from above. I removed the turkey pan and it runs great.

So you say it wouldn't run....does that mean it was to lean or rich or ?

I must say however, that's one nice engine bay you have there Pat.
Do you run that fuel pressure gauge full time, or is it just a plug n play for adjusting settings?
Only reason I ask is bc I like the look of it, but am having 2nd thoughts with all these engine fire stories.
Ps. Sorry for the hi-jack.

I have a Snellings air filter, I was considering the idea to use a filter from KN which will give me more air flow, like the one posted by Patrick. I will post a picture of my engine next.

Gary, it would run super rich, foul the plugs, and die.

Does anyone know the CFM capability of the K&N E-2570 and E-2600? These are the two that closely match the size of the S&H turkey pan filter.
There is a lot of guessing and theories that the typical turkey pan filters don't flow enough.
I suspect the filters flow enough for typical street rpms. If no one knows the rated flows I will call K&N and ask.

Guys,
I found a calculator on the K&N website. It shows that a 447cid with max 6000 rpm would need a filter 5.76" tall x 8.188" OD. The typical S&H replacement is 1.875" tall.
A=(CID X RPM) / 20,839
A = effective filtering area
CID = cubic inch displacement
RPM = revolutions per minute at maximum power
Example: A 350 CID Chevy engine with a horsepower peak at 5,500 rpm.
A=(350 X 5500) / 20,839 = 92.4 square inches
**********************
H=(A/D*3.14)+0.75
A = effective filtering area
H = height
D = outside diameter of the filter
3.14 = pi
0.75 = the rubber end caps
Example:
H=(92.4 / 12 * 3.14)+0.75 = 3.20 inches
