Phil, for a 482, 248 at .050" is a pretty mild cam. I use similar grinds in my 482 stuff and they have a nice lope but also have good vacuum.

The cam for this one is a hoss-cat, but it needs to be to put the hp peak where we want it.

My cam is very much like Phil's (245/252, .631/.650 lift), popular middle of the road cam for a 482. I've always maintained that it's just about perfect for me, but I've always thought maybe just a touch more would have been even better.

The cam chosen for this 496 project should be nearing the radical side of the scale with almost .800 lift. What is the intended use of this engine and Cobra?

Heads help a lot, Rod. A higher flowing head makes it easier for the cam to work. So if you have an existing setup, then add head flow (better flow/velocity), the engine will generally peak a little higher. May be an option for you down the road.

Your cam and Phil's cams are pretty moderate, I use those specs quite a bit for hydraulic roller 482's with CNC'd Edelbrock heads, and they generally give a 5500-6000 rpm hp peak. Should be very streetable. I did a 487 with basically stock performing Edelbrocks, used a 244/248 @ .050" cam with .620-ish lift on a 112 LSA, and the customer was very happy....had more than enough vacuum to run power brakes, etc.

The cam for this engine is .775" gross lift. You lose about .020" of that to lash, so you end up at about .750" net lift, which will work well with the cylinder heads.

The engine is going in a Cobra designed for weekend fun. Customer is very well acquainted with higher revving, higher horsepower engines, and he wanted to up the ante over his existing mill.

Keith has almost finished up the heads. I don't have a dog in the cylinder head fight, so I get to use anything and everything...LOL

Keith has done a good job with taking a set of Stage 2 Edelbrocks and upgrading them to Stage 3. I shipped him a set of custom Ferrea 5/16" valves and he changed the guides, did the valve job, and did the port work.

Check these numbers out, especially mid lift numbers:

Intake:

.300 - 225
.400 - 281
.500 - 331
.600 - 352
.700 - 361

On the exhaust side, he's getting 264 @ .700".

This was on a 4.250" fixture, on his SF 1020 bench.

These heads flow 30 more cfm at .400" lift than an out of the box Edelbrock flows at .600-.650".

He's getting me numbers for .750-.800 lift and I will pass that on when I get it.

Diamond pistons came today....

Only 518g, very light for a 4.310" bore.

Nice, I need a set of those for my Shelby block.
What's the guess on HP with this one?

You can't foresee a problem with that?
Identity crisis perhaps?

601HP,
Your build? I noticed in your profile it says, 'No engine for a while'.
That's gonna be a sweet motor.

I do have a horse in this race, as many as Brent can fabricate.

Well...... I planned for it to be your prime-time show during the build of the engine. After the build, it would become my show. However, I allowed a flippant left-field comment from Oz-land to irritate me.

So Brent, it's still your show! Go make some horsepower.

Rodney,
I'm half there with the wheels. I copped a pair of still in the box NOS Halibrands, circa 1980's casting, a few months ago. They're fronts. I'm still trolling for rears.
