'68 428 PI/CJ lifter type

All,

I have a 1968 428 engine that I know is either a PI or CJ. I haven't taken the tranny off to see which one yet. Does anyone know if this engine has solid or hydraulic lifters?

After 46 years it could have anything in it. You could check and see if it has adjustable rocker arms for solids - but that wouldn't be conclusive either as I run hydraulics with adjustable rockers. You would have to pull a lifter to be absolutely sure of what is in there now.

The two versions of the 428 CJ engine came out in 1969 and had hydraulic lifters. I think some of the 68 PI engines may have had solids but like Dan said, the only way to be absolutely sure is to pull a lifter and look at it. Ford used the CJ engines in the Shelby GT-500KR Mustang and the PI engines in the regular GT-500s.

I'm not 100% sure either but I'm pretty sure some of the 390 PI engines ran solids so I also think some or the 428 PIs did too (originally - 46 years ago ).

I had a 390 HiPo that ran solids. My 69 Cobra with the 428 SCJ engine came with hydraulics that were rated up to 7,000 RPM, but in trying to keep up with the lousy gas we now have, I had the compression lowered and also changed the cam and changed over to solid lifters. All I gained was a loss of top end speed and the gas gets worse. I believe the 428 PI engines that Shelby used had solids but I just don't remember for sure. I have a book on them somewhere if I can find it.

Somewhere along the line most all of them got gallies for hydraulic lifters, however, on the solid lifter police engines there were 2 little drive in plugs in the galley from the center oil gally out to the lifter galley-you can remove the screw in plug and drill out the drive in plug if you either want hydraulics-------orrrrrrrrrr, you can do the same and run a lifter type like was in the other type ford engine that would oil the top end thru the pushrod----this also will let you get more oil to the cam lobe area as you can get lifters with an edm hole in the base--------
