Lykins Motorsports 511FE Build
This is a new one that should be pretty fun. It's for a Club Cobra member, Darrell Kennedy. He's buying a Unique Cobra and contacted me to build an all-aluminum FE for it.
The build will consist of an aluminum Pond block, some Survival Motorsports CNC heads, a Blue Thunder 1x4 intake, with a hydraulic roller camshaft.
Here are a few pics of the cylinder heads and some flow numbers:
*4.155" Bore Plate, Intake Flow
.1 102
.2 163
.3 229
.4 294
.5 324
.6 349
.7 364
.8 369
*4.500" Bore Plate, Intake Flow
.1 102
.2 163
.3 230
.4 290
.5 317
.6 341
.7 355
.8 370
*4.500" Bore Plate, Exhaust Flow, 2" Pipe
.1 65
.2 112
.3 155
.4 185
.5 205
.6 220
.7 244
.8 250
*4.500" Bore Plate, Exhaust Flow, No Pipe
.1 61
.2 107
.3 145
.4 176
.5 193
.6 208
.7 236
.8 242
I had asked Barry to flow them before he shipped them to me so we could have some comparative data. We both used SF600 benches and our exhaust numbers were within 3-4 cfm if I remember correctly. The intake numbers were off slightly more, but I did a few things differently with the prep and with the flow bench arrangements.

Cool comparo. I do understand why exhaust flow picked up with the 2" pipe but I don't get why intake flow was better with a 4.155" Bore Plate vs. the 4.5. That seems bassakwards to me. I always thought that cylinder wall shrouding would hurt flow, what gives?
Regardless, that seems like a very nice pair of heads!

My guess is that it's not an issue of valve shrouding, it's an issue of a significant increase in vacuum with the smaller bore. May not be replicated on running engine, may just be a flow bench thing.

What are the goals for the engine?

Goals?
250 hp, 275 lb-ft of torque, and not scatter parts all over the place.

Makes sense, 511 and CNC port, is that to keep it quiet? Hardly hear the air rushing through.

It is interesting to me because my build is similar. Smaller CI and no CNC port.

Now you're catching on.... Just teasing....
Looking for a solid 600-625 hp with this one. The cubes will like this CNC port and we can make the hp without having to add a lot of cam.

I am questioning my desire for 600 hp. It will be hard to handle. Then the other me thinks, yea I should go solid roller and CNC port for more RPM?

Cars have gas pedals. You can push them down as far as you want. These engines are perfectly streetable at 600 hp and won't get away from you if you don't do anything stupid.
Since Barry is your builder, you can discuss all of this with him. But from where I sit, a better flowing head is always a better scenario. I don't think you need a solid roller, but talk to him about CNC'ing the heads.

To get the cubes do you have to bore it to the limit?

Depends on which block you're using.

You'd be close to capacity with a Pond aluminum block. I've done some 4.270" x 4.375" combos that still get you over 500 inches though.

Hi guys,
Have lurked around this web site for several years, as a guest, reading the forums and gaining knowledge before I purchased my dream car, a Unique Motorcars Cobra. I currently own a 2007 Shelby GT500 and grew up in the car industry and go to a lot of car shows. I guess I have the fever.
I apologize for not introducing myself in the intro forum. My computer skills leave a lot to be desired.
Brent's reputation on this site and the discussion with some people who he built engines for was the reason I chose him to build my FE.
I grew up in the car business where my Dad was a mechanic for over 40 years. Learned a lot from him. Raced big block (427 - 428) engines back in the 60's and wanted to continue that love affair with an FE in my Cobra. Nothing better than cubic inches and the sound of a big block.
This will be a fun car for me to enjoy and continue my involvement in cars, car shows, etc.
