Yeah - once followed by a loud boom. FE's are pretty tough. I'm sure I've bored plenty of people with my story of my High School buddy whose parents bought him a new, off the showroom floor, 1969 390 auto Mach 1 Mustang. He was running it through the gears the same day he picked it up, going as high as it would go - and nobody thought a 390/315 HP was supposed to go very high. He was a believer that if you wanted a fast car, break it in hard and fast. Apparently not satisfied with the factory tach he bought a nice Stewart Warner tach and mounted in on the column. The only thing he did to the car was pull off the muffler, leave the resonators and run straight pipes out the rear. A few weeks later we took it out on a new stretch of recently opened Interstate to see what it would do with 3 people in the car. I was in the back seat and watched him hit 6000 rpm in all three gears with the speedo reading around 130 mph in 3rd. If I hadn't watched it with my own eyes I would not believe it and would not blame anyone else for doubting it - but that's what I saw. Of course a year later he was hitting valve float at a little over 5000 rpm.

I kept track of him and this Mach 1 for several years and even after countless high rpm runs and shifts he never managed to blow the thing up. The valve springs were probably his saving grace.

Valve float? He got off easy!!
But that does speak to the old 390 GT and 406 motors...

I like 390's. There was a 390 Mustang down here when I was a kid that generally kicked butt among the Chevelles, Camaros, other Mustangs and assorted local muscle cars of the day. It supposedly had nothing more done to it than carb, manifold and headers, but it ran like the blazes in the street drags and races and outlived all of the others to boot. The car itself eventually ended up in the boneyard, but I heard recently that the engine is still intact sitting in the owner's garage.

Hi all, I have a1964 427 fe dual quad all original one owner that runs perfect. complete engine turn key as can be for $10,000. It is in a Sanger boat that we have to sell. It will be interesting to see if I get any interest. It has in the mid 400's for HP and lots!!! of torque. It's happy to idle or cruse along very smooth and screams when you put the hammer down.

I saw it on your other thread and responded. Nice old Sanger!
Did you find the numbers on the block and heads and verify if it's a marine block, side oiler or center oiler? My guess is a center oiler, but you never know.

It's a car engine. My Father in- law was the original owner. It's all original 1964 427 fe race engine. There was some story about how he picked it up from Carroll's shop when they ordered two many engines. He lived in LA and knew all the hot rodders of the time. I can ask some of his friends that were there. Clean Jean will know.
