427 fe side oiler info
Hi guys, i'm looking at a Contemporary Cobra and while checking out the motor I can't seem to locate the casting info on the front right side of the block. I'm positive it's a side oiler and everything else checks out ok receipts for engine work etc.. I got right down into looking at the block and I can't find anything. The block hasn't been sanded or ground down to remove anything, I can't seem to get a handle on this. Anyone have any ideas? Am I looking in the correct area? Thanks in advance.
PS The heads have C5AE-F Casted on the heads that tells me it's a 1965-66 date. |

There is absolutely no casting marks on the right front of the engine. However at the oil filter I found 6 1 C E2. Could this mean anything. I was told it was a 1966 side oiler, could it be a marine engine?

You can't identify a side oiler by casting numbers. FE casting numbers were all over the map. Take a look at the link posted by shootnride. Here it is again: http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/fe-t...ification.html The pic (in the link) by blykins shows the timing cover area and a plug where the side oiling passage was drilled. There's a little red arrow in the pic to highlight the passage. The pic posted by dcdoug shows 3 cross bolts - near the blue paint. Immediately below the cross bolts (block in pic is upside down), you'll see 3 small allen plugs. These plugs are for the side oiler passages. You'll also see a hump in the block to make room for the oil passages. The pic also shows screw in core plugs. Early 427 blocks had normal cup plugs, but I believe all side oilers had screw in plugs. In this photo you can see the cross-bolted mains (arrows), the side-oiler bulge above those and the 3 allen plugs.
