Default Need FE heads

I have Edelbrock heads on my 427 which was originally built in 1998.

One head is soft and needs to be replaced. Edelbrock no longer sells the bare head that matches what I have and the closest thing they have is a 60075, which would require additional machine work to match existing heads.
So i'm looking for a new set of heads, but nobody has anything in stock, and very long lead times due to vendor outages due to covid ??
I am leaning towards Trick Flow, but have questions and calls to factory go unanswered . been searching for three weeks or more, talked to survival,
BBM, and others. Pro maxx (not pro comp) they can supply, but castings are made in asia.
Anyone have any experience with them ? They are the "least expensive".

TIA
Ted

BBM heads are made in Korea and are cast in a foundry that (from a cleanliness perspective) looks more like a engine assembly clean room than a foundry. I visited their foundry in Korea about two or three years ago and was impressed in the extreme. The personnel are knowledgeable and the products are stunningly well made. I think you will be very happy with the BBM choice.

BTW they make a variety of other items like 392 Hemi blocks, 427 FE blocks, Ford Coyote blocks, intake manifolds etc., all comparably high quality.

BBM may be your best bet.

Trick Flow heads are cast by Edelbrock and Edelbrock is currently moving across the US. I don't think I will see any TFS heads for months now.

ProMaxx is a Chinese copy of an Edelbrock.

There are no advantages to Shelby heads unless they have been fully ported. The last pair I saw flow numbers on, were about as bad as the Edelbrocks out of the box.

You sure do pay for the name though........

Shelby Aluminum FE Heads are cast from A-356 aluminum, heat treated to T6 hardness level and precision CNC machined. Patterned on Ford's famous 427 FE medium-raiser cast iron heads, Shelby FE heads offer leading edge air flow improvements, starting with standard 2.250-inch intake and 1.750-inch exhaust valve diameters.

Due to valve size, the heads are suitable only for Shelby 427 Alloy FE or factory 427 cast iron blocks. These heads utilize 14mm diameter, 3/4-inch reach, gasketed spark plugs positioned in the stock location. A revised design with the valve locations moved, these heads will require custom pistons. They are sold in pairs, complete or bare.

Well, new pistons are not going to happen !

I have extensive experience with ProMAXX. They're good.

And the owner is a straight shooter. His word has always been solid.

IMO, the Trick Flow head is simply the best out of the box FE cylinder head as of right now. I'm predominantly an FE builder and the TFS heads are just superb. Unfortunately, they are out of stock nation-wide because Edelbrock casts them and Edelbrock's operation is in limbo.

Ted, I understand the situation you're in and you're looking to get a replacement in a quick period of time.

I would look to BBM and see if they have heads in stock. That would be the closest bolt-on for you and would add some horsepower as well, in comparison to your box-stock Edelbrocks.

The ProMaxx heads may be nice but I choose to not carry them because they are Chinese knock-offs of Edelbrock pieces. Stevens copied these heads and pushed them years and years ago and finally got the ProMaxx clan to jump on board. They are simply a copy of the Edelbrock. Now, you may argue that everything is a copy of everything else, and you may be correct in some aspects, but to me, the ProMaxx head is to Edelbrock, as SpeedMaster/Procomp is to MSD, CHI, etc., etc.

Hi Ted. I have a brand new set of Edelbrock FE heads (about 10 or 12 years old) sitting on my shelf.

Complete with:

Ferrea SS valves with a 3 angle valve job
Crane springs/retainers/seals
Erson rocker arm system
Edelbrock head bolts.

All new sitting on my shelf.

PM me if they are of interest to you.

Cheers
Greg

Thumbs up

Another suggestion, check with Keith Craft. They do lots of head work for various manufacturers and might have something in stock. Worth a phone call at least.

Brent: TFS is my first choice, based on your reviews over the last couple years, but this present global shortage of "stuff" is open ended, and I can't wait that long. Of course, the way my luck seems to run, as soon as i buy some other brand, TFS will find 10,000 heads in a warehouse that they forgot about.!!!

my427cobra : you should have a PM, if not, please call 941-730-2020.

jwoodard::

Keith sold his shop some time ago, but his name popped up on the FE forum.
PRO MAXX states that he does their "CNC" work.

Ted,

I also have a set of Edelbrock heads. Mine have about 35,000 miles on them. They are the KeithCraft stage 2 heads that have been CNC ported so they flow significantly better than out of the box Edelbrock heads. If you have an interest, ping me and I can send pics and any other details you need.

The BBM head is a medium riser head, if I remember correctly, and has very good flow numbers right out of the box. Ported it is even better. Most significantly if they are available, you will find them to be a high quality piece that will serve you well for a long time.

If you have not yet, check out their FE Cylinder Head page, click here => BBM FE Cylinder Heads. there is a lot to like about the heads including a more modern combustion chamber shape for better combustion.

Here is a pic of the chamber side of the head,

I understand Keith sold his business to his partner a few years back. You can still get his engines, heads, machinework, etc. They now go by Craft Performance.
