428 cam bearings

I was wondering if anyone who has rebuilt a 428 lately had any trouble getting cam bearings? It is my understanding that cam bearings for a 428 "top oiler" need to be grooved so the oil can get from the cam to the mains. This means the bearings have two holes and the no. 2 and 4 bearing have three holes so oil can get to the heads as well. It seems like when you order bearings from the local shop or even Summit they give you non-grooved bearings with only one hole in each one. Has anyone else had similar experiences and where did you get your bearings from??? Thanks.

Only the 427 side oiler blocks require grooved cam bearings on #2 and # 4 journals. Your 428 block uses standard FE cam bearings. I have been using coated cam bearings from Dura-Bond and really like them. They are one piece (not rolled from a flat sheet) and are of a very high quality.

Just finished building mine (again) and I used Federal Mogul standard bearings. Plenty of oil to the top and everywhere else (as long as you don't have your remote oil lines crossed-be careful).

Make absolutely SURE you have a 428 and not a 427 side-oiler. If you use the wrong bearings in the side-oiler, it'll be toast real quick.

The top or centre oiler has a groove counterbored into the block that carries the oil behind the #3 cam bearing to the bottom end. It needs 2 holes and no groove. The #2 and #4 cam bearings need three holes with a groove between two of them to feed the oil to the heads. Just look over the oil system carefully and follow the oil through the motor to be sure it's getting everywhere it needs to be. There are several theories and modifications you can make to the stock shells and their oil hole sizes. One of the most commonly recommended oil system modifications is to enlarge the 3/8" oilway from the pump to the filter to at least 7/16" and port match the ends. For a street motor that doesn't see sustained revs the stock centre oiler with reasonable bearing clearances and a good pump will provide plenty of oil pressure. I got my cam bearings and anything I can from Jegs.

Don't put the gasket for the remote in backwards either.

Your motor will last 2 minutes.
