Default how do you figure out how many quarts of oil?

My cars previous owner installed the wrong length dipstick, My queston is how can the correct ammount of oil be determined? I have a plug on the top side of the tee pan if this helps. I need to install a new dipstick and mark it to the full oil level.. I had a strange mark on my dip stick and dident think much of it, when I got to thinking the guy I purchaced the car from said it would only go in one way or it will work its way back out. After installing my fresh motor I checked the oil level and noticed the mark was worse! so I took a new piece of welding rod and stuck it down into the oil tube until it bottemed out in the pan, After checking it's length against the dip stick I found out the dip stick was 6 inches too long and It must have bowed the dipstick into the rotating assembly!! so any word on the correct way to procede would be appreciated.. thanks

The bung on the tee is for your oil temp gauge. You'll probably have a 7 or 8 qt oil pan, there's no way of knowing for sure without knowing the pan part number. When that plug is out of the tee there should not be any oil coming out, the oil needs to be below that level, but high enough it hit the temp gauge probe. Jack you car up level so you can get under it, put in 7 qts oil with the plug out, then stick your welding rod in the hole and see how far below that hole it is. You would want it about 1/2 below the hole. WIth that you have your capacity, then add a quart for the filter and you'll know how much oil to use......

I am at the same stage too
Waiiting for a Lokar stick to relace my stock job that no longer fits with headers etc.

Oil pan capacity is one variable
Filter/s capacity
Oil cooler and corresponding lines.
Lastly would be if an accumulator were in use.

So figure what you have in place and know the corresponding capacity of each and add them up.

How much would you allow for the oil cooler and lines? Would a quart be enough? I am allowing a quart for the filter also (FL-1).
Thanks in advance,
Bruce
