Default 428 CJ Cam Advice

I am just finishing up my 428 CJ for my new Superformance. When I brought the engine it had been in a show truck to replace the stock 390 that was in it. The guy who did the work before me set it up for torque and used Com Cams 270H hydraulic cam set. I am wondering if the 292H would be a better fit for a Cobra. Any problems with vacuum??

Thanks in advance for any ideas...

I have a 428 in SPF 1287. I used Comp Cam 280H and had no problem with vaccumn for brakes. I switched to 282S and it also works well. It has almost 10" vaccumn at idle.. Steve

I am a firm believer in agressive cams in an FE, especially longer stroke like a 428. The 280H is mild, I run one in a 390 truck, I dont think you'll be happy. The 292 will be agressive, but should be fine in a light vehicle. If there is one between the two, it may be the way to go, but if it were mine I'd buy the 292

BTW I run a 306 in my Mustang and its streetable in a 427 and they are less tolerant with the shorter stroke (although its really radical, probably too much for yours)

The difference in mid range between the 292 and 270 will be amazing, that cam is WAY too small, even for a truck

Go for the 292 and it will be fun or if they have a 288 it would work too. My guide would be 240 degrees duration @ .050.

Default Me too

I also ran the 306 cam in my 68 GT500KR and I absolutely loved it. However, brake vac was a bit on the low side....lol. But the bottom line was that the car ran like a raped ape. My Cobra has no power brakes so vac isn't an issue for me but I agree, go for as much cam as you can and still have it drivable. Remember, a good cam is one of the easiest ways, if not the easiest, to attain HP and Torque gains, just my opinion.

Thanks for the advice. I think I am going with the 292H...

I run an Elgin cam which has stock Ford numbers from 1964. My FE is a 390 bored 60 over with ported heads and 428 valves (2.09 and 1.66) . The cam numbers are advertized 324 deg. lift is .524, duration at 50 is 245. This is a solid lifter cam and the power band is about 3000 to 7000rpm. As said from above it runs like a raped ape.
