Default which toploader with FE??

Hi Guys, can anyone tell me the general difference between toploaders. not the gears or splines. I am wondering the difference between big block and small block. also why are truck toploaders so cheap. Can they be used in a 428 cobra? can a small block loader be used with the 428?

AZ, The main external diff between BB and SB toploaders is the size of the input/output splines; along with internal changes, the BB toploaders have a higher torque capacity. The cases may be the same or very similar. Check with David Kee.
I was told that the truck toploaders have a low-low first gear (grandma). They could no doubt be used behind a 428, but you might want to add a drawbar so you could plow or pull stumps with it ( ).
The small toploader can/has been used behind 428s, and would do okay for mild street use, as long as the tires didn't hook up.
Comments, guys?

Default Toploaders

All toploaders - same case, same major internals except whats listed below (not counting gear ratios for wide/close ratio and length differences / tailshaft housing)

Small block and 390 FE toploaders - Small input and output shaft, but like I said above, gear sets are same as 427/428, other than in/out shaft (390 is same as small block box but slightly shorter input for FE, small block can be cut)

427/428 - Bigger input and output shaft, same case, same gear sets

Truck toploader - Think 3 speed with overdrive. Limited shifter options, wider ratio step. I havent messed with these but no-one is using them, that must be an indication

In a light Cobra, under 450 horse, I'd say the small block or 390 is plenty. If you are running slicks, go with a big input/output

Bottom line, aside from in/out shafts and overall lengths, all toploaders are the same, so there are no "internal differences" that make them stronger, just the input and output

Call David Kee.The truck toploaderhas different gear ratios.
I have a NASCAR Toploader from David. He changed it to a wide-ratio so it works perfect with my 3.27 gears.
